THE MATCHUP: Benedictine (Kan.) hosts the Benedictine Classic, featuring Oklahoma City University, Avila (Mo.) and Hannibal LaGrange (Mo.) on Friday and Saturday in Atchison, Kan. The Stars face Avila and host Benedictine.
ABOUT THE STARS: Oklahoma City University played to record-setting performances against Baptist Bible on Nov. 13, posting a 138-26 victory. The third-ranked Stars grabbed school records in multiple categories and earned a place in the NAIA record books as well. OCU's performance now ranks second in the NAIA for field goals made (64) and third for total points (138). In the last time out for the Stars, OCU took care of 24th-ranked and previously unbeaten Evangel 72-40 Tuesday at Abe Lemons Arena.
Lauren Gober, a 6-foot-1 sophomore from Newcastle, Okla., had 13 points, five rebounds and two steals in her 24 minutes on the court against Evangel. She was 3-of-4 from 3-point range in the contest.
Donica Cosby, a 5-8 senior from Coldwater, Miss, scored 13 points and added three assists, a block and a steal for the Stars. Cosby was 5-of-7 from the field in the game. Desiree Jeffries, a 6-0 sophomore from Oklahoma City, recorded 13 points and three rebounds for OCU.
Chasity Workman, a 5-9 senior from Carrollton, Texas, also recorded a double-digit scoring night with 10 points, five boards and a steal.
The Stars were ranked third in the preseason NAIA Division I rankings. SAC coaches placed OCU as the heavy favorite to win the league title. OCU has won or shared the SAC regular-season crown 11 times. Five-time national champion OCU entered the season tied for the most wins in NAIA women's basketball since 2000-01.
OCU will meet Avila and Benedictine for the first time ever in women's basketball.
ABOUT THE EAGLES: The 3-1 Avila women's basketball team continued a trend of defeating nationally-ranked NAIA Division II opponents at home when it edged No. 23 Columbia (Mo.) 68-66 Nov. 16 at the Mabee Fieldhouse in Kansas City, Mo.
Alyson Young, a 6-0 senior, led the Eagles with 20 points and 13 rebounds. Jessica James, a 6-0 senior, picked up a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Loganne Grinder, a 5-11 junior, and Brittany Townsend, a 5-9 junior, had 15 points apiece in the victory.
Avila was slated to finish fourth in the in the Heart of America Athletic Conference in the preseason.
ABOUT THE LADY RAVENS: Benedictine picked up a pair of wins in the Park Classic to improve to 2-1 on the season. Benedictine's first victory came in a matchup with the host team, Park (Mo.) that saw the Lady Ravens win 66-60 in overtime.
Jillian Flores, a 6-0 senior, had 13 points and seven rebounds for Benedictine against Park. Kaela Stratman, a 5-5 senior, notched 12 points and seven rebounds. Kelsey Wolfe, a 5-6 junior, added 10 points and nine boards, going 5-of-6 from the free-throw line in the game.
The Lady Ravens also picked up a 70-60 victory over Ottawa (Kan.) in the Park Classic. Stratman had 18 points and three rebounds in the game and Wolfe added 15 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the field in the win.
Benedictine was picked to finish fifth in the in the Heart of America Athletic Conference in the preseason.
ABOUT THE COACHES: Rob Edmisson has posted a stellar 153-26 record in his sixth season at OCU and a 455-145 record overall in his 21st season as a head coach. Edmisson, a two-time SAC coach of the year, has led the Stars to SAC regular-season championships three times and three SAC Tournament titles. Edmisson coached the only player drafted into the WNBA from OCU, Mariam Sy. He won 192 games at Hutchinson (Kan.) and 110 as a high-school coach in Kansas.
Larry Williams is in his fifth season at the helm of the Avila program. Williams has a 78-48 career record for the Eagles, including a third-place finish in the Heart of America Athletic Conference last season.
Chad Folsom is in his 10th year at Benedictine and has compiled a 195-98 record for the Ravens. Folsom sits as the winningest coach in Benedictine women's basketball history. In 2006, he guided the Lady Ravens to the NAIA Division II tournament quarterfinals.
