OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University overwhelmed Baptist Bible (Mo.) 138-26 on Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
The Stars, ranked third in NAIA Division I women's basketball, set single-game program records for margin of victory (112 points), field goals (64), assists (51) and points allowed in a half (seven). OCU improved to 2-0.
OCU had seven double-figure scorers. Kayla MacKenzie, a freshman from Peoria, Ariz., topped OCU with 21 points in her Stars debut. Chasity Workman, a senior from Carrollton, Texas, added 20 points, seven rebounds, six assists and four steals while hitting 10 of her 12 shots from the floor.
Cara Pugh had 18 points, six rebounds and three assists, while Tiffany Goldwire recorded 15 points, four rebounds, four assists and four steals. Desiree Jeffries contributed 14 points, five rebounds, six assists and two steals, and Donica Cosby compiled 13 points, five assists and five steals. Starr Fairbanks had 10 points and two assists for OCU.
Taylor Booze led OCU with 10 assists. The Stars sank 64 of their 89 shots from the field.
“It was a great game for our freshmen,” OCU coach Rob Edmisson said. “When you have 81 bench points, everybody had a chance to play. We did a good job of continuing to share the ball.”
OCU pocketed 29 steals as Baptist Bible gave the ball up 40 times. The Stars scored 109 points in the paint, 59 points in transition and 59 points off turnovers. Baptist Bible hit 11 of its 39 shots from the floor for a 28.2 percent shooting percentage.
“We knew what were headed to,” Edmisson said. “You goal is to be disciplined. We didn't get into a ragged or sloppy game.”
OCU outscored Baptist Bible 49-0 through 5:21 left in the first half. To that point, Baptist Bible committed 23 turnovers and missed eight shots. Meagan Winslow scored Baptist Bible's first basket of the game at the 5:21 mark.
MacKenzie put OCU up by 112 points on a transition bucket with 16 seconds remaining.
The Stars face 24th-ranked Evangel (Mo.) at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Abe Lemons Arena.
