SHAWNEE, Okla. – Oklahoma Baptist snapped Oklahoma City University's four-match winning string, prevailing 25-23, 25-19, 25-22 on Tuesday at the Noble Complex.
Oklahoma Baptist, ranked 20th in NAIA volleyball, improved to 22-8, 9-2 in the Sooner Athletic Conference. OCU (17-10, 7-4) beat Oklahoma Baptist in five sets on Sept. 30 at Abe Lemons Arena.
Xiaoting Ma, a senior from Dalian, China, topped OCU with 13 kills while picking up six digs. Victoria Cross, a junior from Oklahoma City, added 15 digs.
Vicky Murphy chipped in seven kills for the Stars. Alex Benbrook and Taylor Rowton each had five kills and three blocks for OCU.
OCU made a run after Kristin Pressley brought Oklahoma Baptist match with a kill to make the third-set score 24-18. Ma and Murphy knocked down kills as the Stars cut their deficit to 24-22. Rupia Inck's kill put away the match for Oklahoma Baptist.
Oklahoma Baptist overcame a 6-2 first-set deficit to take the set. Oklahoma Baptist broke away from a 21-21 tie to reach set point at 24-21. Tarah Derden, Pressley and Skyler Strahm provided Oklahoma Baptist kills. OCU fought back with Rowton's kill before Strahm notched the set-winning kill.
The Stars face St. Gregory's at 7 p.m. Thursday at Abe Lemons Arena. OCU will honor Ma, its two-time all-American senior that night.
