Stars blitz Rogers State 85-63

Starr Fairbanks had 21 points in 22 minutes on Thursday against Rogers State.

CLAREMORE, Okla. – Donica Cosby scored a game-high 29 points and Oklahoma City University rolled to an 85-63 victory over Rogers State on Thursday evening at the Claremore Expo Center.

The Stars, ranked seventh in NAIA Division I women's basketball, have now won five straight conference games. OCU improved to 10-3, 5-1 in the Sooner Athletic Conference. Rogers State lost its first game at home this season, and dropped to 11-3, 3-3 in the SAC.

“I thought this was a quality win,” OCU coach Rob Edmisson said. “I thought our kids, with some adversity, played well. We didn't play our best game but it was a workman-like effort.
“I think our tough non-conference schedule helped prepare us for playing on the road and being successful. You have to be able to win on the road in this conference.”

Starr Fairbanks, a junior from Cincinnati, put in 21 points and six rebounds in just 22 minutes.

OCU put Rogers State away with a 14-6 run to open the second half to take a 48-31 advantage. K.J. Johnson banked in a 3-pointer, then Chontaye Walter scored in the paint to give the Stars a 15-point advantage. Fairbanks scored on a jumper to finish off the run.

Lauren Gober hit a 3-pointer with 1:04 left in the game to give OCU its biggest lead of the game at 81-60.

Cosby, a junior from Coldwater, Miss., had a big first half with 20 points to carry the Stars out to an early lead.

OCU went on a 14-4 run over six minutes late in the first half to build a comfortable 34-23 lead.

Cosby started the run with a 3-pointer with 6:32 to play in the first half. Fairbanks added a pair of free throws, and Gober gathered her own miss for an easy layup to push the lead out to 27-19 with 5:06 left in the first frame.

Cosby hit consecutive jumpers and finished the run with a pair of free throws. OCU led 34-25 at the break.

Holly Hardin, Walter and Gober each had eight points in the game.

The Stars will host John Brown (Ark.) on Saturday at 3 p.m. inside Abe Lemons Arena.
