Stars go 1-2 in Concordia Labor Day Tourney

Elizabeth Hendrix had seven digs and two aces against Westminster.

IRVINE, Calif. – Oklahoma City University managed a 17-25, 26-24, 26-24, 25-23 win over Westminster (Utah) on Friday in the Concordia Labor Day Tournament at the CU Arena.

The Stars also fell to second-ranked Concordia (Calif.) 25-17, 25-23, 25-18 and Carroll (Mont.) 19-25, 25-23, 25-10, 25-17. OCU went to 4-3 on the year.

Against Westminster, Jeannee Campbell and Lindsay Hansen rang up a team-high 13 kills each for OCU. Xiaoting Ma chipped in 12 kills, 13 digs and two blocks, while Adrienne Tillery had 10 kills, three blocks and two aces for the Stars.

Samantha Ball recorded 31 assists and 10 digs, and Shelbey Veselka picked up a team-high 22 digs. Vicky Murphy put together 20 assists, and Brittany Segars had 11 digs.

Hansen, a senior from Moore, Okla., had two late kills to help OCU put away the second set. She used Murphy's set to put OCU ahead 24-23, then utilized Ball's assist to clinch the set on a kill. In the third set, Ma did the honors, nailing a kill to tie the set 24-24 and another to finish off the third-set win.

Ma and Tillery teamed on a block to get OCU to match point at 24-22 in the fourth set. After Ericka Evans answered with a kill, Campbell set down the decisive kill.

Against Concordia, Ma tallied 10 kills and four digs. Veselka added 11 digs, while Tillery had six kills and two blocks. Concordia reached the NAIA championship match last year.

Against Carroll, Hansen pounded out 10 kills, while Ma added nine kills and six digs. Ball had 17 assists and five digs, while Murphy handed out 15 assists and set down five kills. Campbell had six kills and six digs.

In the second set, Concordia got to set point, but OCU answered with a couple of points. Ma nailed a kill to cut OCU's deficit to 24-23, but Christina Smetana came through with the set-clinching kill.

The Stars continue play in the Concordia Labor Day Tournament, taking on Westmont (Calif.) at 5 p.m. Central time and third-ranked California Baptist at 11 p.m.
