OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University fell to College of the Ozarks (Mo.) 25-17, 25-23, 25-18 in a clash of unbeaten volleyball teams on Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena in the Oklahoma City Classic.
The Stars (3-1) also beat Lyon (Ark.) 25-10, 25-20, 25-16 earlier in the day.
Against College of the Ozarks, Jeannee Campbell paced the Stars with 11 kills, while Xiaoting Ma added nine kills and 15 digs. Shelbey Veselka topped OCU in digs with 23. Samantha Ball and Vicky Murphy combined for 26 assists.
In the second set, OCU built a 9-3 advantage using back-to-back kills by Campbell and Alex Benbrook. College of the Ozarks rallied and overcame a 23-22 OCU lead. Ozarks closed out the set with Jennifer Nichols' kill and service ace, then Veronica Barrientos' kill.
“I saw some good things from our team,” OCU coach Jen Gomez said. “Our kids worked really hard. Our defense got even better throughout the tournament. I'm pleased with what I see.”
College of the Ozarks snapped the Stars' 11-match win streak in the OCU Classic all time.
“College of the Ozarks was the best team here,” Gomez said. “It was a good tournament for us. We were able to see a lot of different people and different lineups on the floor. We are still looking for our six best.”
Against Lyon, Ma led OCU with 11 kills to go with five digs. Benbrook chipped in eight kills and three blocks. Veselka added 11 digs.
The Stars will face two teams ranked in the NAIA's top five Sept. 4-5 in the Concordia Labor Day Tournament. Among the matches, OCU will take on second-ranked 2008 national runner-up Concordia (Calif.) at 1 p.m. Central time Sept. 4 and third-ranked California Baptist at 11 p.m. Sept. 5 in Irvine, Calif.
