DECATUR, Ala. – Oklahoma City University built a seven-run lead on the way to a 7-3 victory over Simon Fraser (British Columbia) on Sunday at Wilson Morgan Softball Complex in the NAIA Championships.
The sixth-ranked Stars snuffed out a bases-loaded situation as Ashley Wilburn forced a groundout to end the game. OCU (51-7) advanced to bracket play to face Dickinson State (S.D.) at 11 a.m. Monday. No. 10 Simon Fraser (20-13) ended its season.
OCU had a four-run second inning. Kendall Hobens brought home Laurin Hess on a base hit to right-center field, then scored on Amanda Howard's single to left. Mindy Crabaugh added a two-run base hit.
In the third, Lily LaVelle plated two runs with a single to center. Howard put OCU ahead 7-0 on a single to score LaVelle.
Wilburn threw four innings, allowing one run on three hits and three walks. Wilburn, a junior from Gilmer, Texas, struck out four and improved to 23-3. LaVelle struck out three in the first three innings.
Erin Slettvet, a senior from Long Beach, Calif., went 3-for-4, while Howard, a junior from Strathmore, Alberta, Canada, went 2-for-5 with a run scored and two RBIs. Hobens was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a run driven in, and Crabaugh went 1-for-3 with two RBIs. LaVelle was 1-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.
