OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University softball topped Southern Nazarene 14-0, 9-5 on Tuesday at Ann Lacy Stadium.
The Stars, ranked fourth in the NAIA, improved to 36-4, 18-2 in the Sooner Athletic Conference. No. 21 Southern Nazarene fell to 27-9, 5-7.
In the first game, the Stars put up eight runs in the second inning. Mindy Crabaugh, a senior from Edmond, Okla., knocked out a grand slam over the right-field wall, posting four of the eight runs in the inning. Erin Slettvet, a senior from Long Beach, Calif., also had a home run in the second inning, knocking out a two-run hit to center field.
The Stars scored two more runs in the third inning from a two-run bomb smacked out by Amanda Howard over the center-field wall. Howard, a junior from Strathmore, Alberta, Canada, went 2-for-2 with three RBIs.
In the fourth inning, the Stars widened the gap to 14 runs. Lily LaVelle, a freshman from Bridge Creek, Okla., pounded a three-run homer over the left-field wall. LaVelle went 2-for-3 with three RBIs for the Stars.
Ashley Wilburn, a junior from Gilmer, Texas, threw five innings for the Stars and recorded the win. Wilburn had six strikeouts, giving up one hit.
In the second game, the Stars scored four runs in the fifth inning. Jen Davis, a junior from Muscatine, Iowa, hammered a two-run home run to left-center field. Kendall Hobens, a junior from Tulsa, Okla., recorded an RBI with a double down the left field line, scoring Bianca Bryant.
OCU put the game away in the sixth inning, adding three more runs after Southern Nazarene added four more runs in the top of the sixth.
LaVelle threw 5.2 innings for the Stars and recorded the win. LaVelle posted seven strikeouts and gave up four runs on two hits.
The Stars will face St. Gregory's on Thursday at 2 p.m. in Shawnee, Okla.
