OCU splits with Oklahoma Christian

Amanda Howard hit three home runs on Tuesday.

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University softball beat Oklahoma Christian 5-3 before losing the second game 7-4 on Tuesday at Ann Lacy Stadium. 
The Stars, currently ranked sixth in the NAIA, went to 37-7, 19-5 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.

Two home runs in the first game lifted the Stars to the win. Amanda Howard, a junior from Strathmore, Alberta, Canada, knocked one out to center field to tie the score at three in the bottom of the fifth. Erin Slettvet, a senior from Long Beach, Calif., followed Howard in the fifth inning with a home run over the left-field wall. Slettvet's home run gave the Stars a 4-3 lead.

The Stars scored their fifth run in the sixth inning. Lily LaVelle scored from second base on an error.

Melissa Moore, a senior from Oklahoma City, went 3-for-3, batting in one run for the Stars. Slettvet went 2-for-2 with one RBI as well.

LaVelle threw 3.1 innings for the Stars and recorded her 17th win of the season. LaVelle posted six strikeouts and gave up two hits. Ashley Wilburn, a junior from Gilmer, Texas, threw the first 3.2 innings for the Stars and recorded eight strikeouts giving up five hits and three runs. Wilburn helped her own cause in the second inning, smacking out a home run over the left field wall. Wilburn went 1-for-3 with one RBI.

The Stars started out strong in the second game with a home run from lead-off hitter Howard in the first inning.

The Lady Eagles got even in the third inning with back-to-back home runs over the left-field wall by Amber Canady and Amy Urbanovsky. Oklahoma Christian posted four runs in the third inning, giving them a 4-2 lead.

Howard's third home run of the day tied the game at four in the fifth inning. Howard went 3-for-4 with two RBIS.

Oklahoma Christian took the lead in the sixth inning with three runs.

The Stars will face Cameron on Thursday in a doubleheader at Ann Lacy Stadium at 5 p.m.
