OCU at Rogers State men's basketball preview

THE MATCHUP: Oklahoma City University collides with Rogers State, the top-ranked team in the NAIA, on the road.

 

ABOUT THE STARS: OCU, the two-time defending NAIA Division I men's basketball champion, moved to 15-12, 8-11 in the Sooner Athletic Conference after falling to John Brown 84-68 on Thursday at Abe Lemons Arena. Jamel White led the Stars with 21 points, five steals, three rebounds and three assists.
White, a 6-foot-4 junior from Brooklyn, N.Y., paces the Stars, averaging 16 points and 4.9 rebounds per game.
Marlon Jones and DaVell Jackson both followed with 11 points for the Stars. Jones, a 6-10 senior from Greenville, N.C., recorded a team-high nine rebounds. Jackson, a 6-1 junior from Las Vegas, had six boards, five steals and three assists. Vinicius Telo, a 6-8 sophomore from Ribeirao Preto, Brazil, contributed eight points for OCU.

Jackson averages 9.8 points, 4.3 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 1.78 steals. Jones leads the Stars with 5.6 boards per game.

The Stars have won the last three conference championships.

OCU leads the series against Rogers State 2-1. The Stars fell to Rogers State 78-67 on Jan. 15 at Abe Lemons Arena.

 

ABOUT THE HILLCATS: Rogers State improved to 24-1, 18-1 in the Sooner Athletic Conference with an 82-67 defeat of Mid-America Christian on Thursday at the Gaulke Activity Center in Oklahoma City.

Sylvester Spicer led the Hillcats with 15 points, earning seven of those from the free-throw stripe. Deveric Taylor and Eric Young both followed with 12 points rounding out the Hillcats' double-digit scorers. Young posted a double-double adding a team-high 10 boards to his 12 points.

Young, a 6-4 junior, paces Rogers State, averaging 14.1 points and 5.9 rebounds per game. Spicer, a 6-6 junior, adds 11.6 points and 4.3 boards.

Taylor averages 10.9 points per game. Taylor, a 6-2 sophomore, is ranked first in NAIA Division I in 3-point field-goal percentage at 53.3 percent. Rogers State leads the NAIA in team 3-point shooting at 44.1 percent. 

Rogers State is currently ranked first in NAIA Division I.

 

 ABOUT THE COACHES: Kevin Morrissey embarks on his first season as OCU head coach. Morrissey spent the past four seasons as St. Gregory's coach. He also has been an assistant at Missouri State and Texas-Pan American. Morrissey played his college ball at Oklahoma Baptist and Oral Roberts and high school at Bishop McGuinness in Oklahoma City.

Lloyd Williams is in his first season as the head coach of the Rogers State. He was an assistant coach for the Hillcats from 2006-08, and before that he served as the recruiting coordinator assembling the inaugural recruiting class at RSU.
