SHAWNEE, Okla. – Oklahoma Baptist notched a 72-64 overtime victory over Oklahoma City University on Thursday at the Noble Complex in a matchup of top 10-ranked squads in NAIA Division I women's basketball.
Fourth-ranked Oklahoma Baptist (5-1, 1-0 Sooner Athletic Conference) reeled off the final 12 points of the contest. Eighth-rated OCU fell to 4-2, 0-1 in the SAC.
Donica Cosby, a junior from Coldwater, Miss., and Holly Hardin, a senior from Chickasha, Okla., topped the Stars with 17 points each.
Starr Fairbanks chipped in 13 points for OCU, 12 during the second half. Hardin grabbed a team-high eight rebounds and added two blocked shots and two steals. Taujhnae Travis led Oklahoma Baptist with 19 points.
Fairbanks scored last for OCU with a free throw that put the Stars up 64-60 at 2:49 remaining in the game.
Val Siemens connected on a 3-pointer for Oklahoma Baptist, then Travis scored Oklahoma Baptist's go-ahead points with 1:48 left.
OCU went on a 10-3 run to force overtime. Siemens' 3-pointer put Oklahoma Baptist ahead 58-54 with 2:44 left for her team's last basket of regulation. Oklahoma Baptist missed its last three shots in regulation.
Hardin hit free throws with 2:24 left, then Oklahoma Baptist and OCU traded 3-point misses. Travis found her way into the lane, but missed a lay-in with 10 seconds left that Fairbanks rebounded for OCU.
Cosby took Fairbanks' outlet, then drove the lane and drew a foul with 8.7 seconds left. Cosby nailed both free throws to tie the score 58-58.
Fairbanks dropped in a jumper to create a 48-48 deadlock with 6:26 left in the game. Oklahoma Baptist answered with the contest's next seven points.
Ashley Harrell knocked in back-to-back 3-pointers, then Gabriell Mattox added a free throw to give Oklahoma Baptist a 55-48 edge with 4:31 remaining in the game.
OCU forged a 27-27 tie shortly after halftime to finish off a stretch of nine unanswered points for the Stars. Fairbanks knotted the game up with a jumper in the lane.
Emily Davis started OCU's 9-0 run with a bucket at 3:03 remaining in the first period. Hardin scored, then Lauren Gober sank a 3-pointer with 1:20 left before halftime for the Stars.
The Stars meet St. Gregory's at 3 p.m. Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
