THE MATCHUP: Oklahoma City University opens Sooner Athletic Conference play on the road against Oklahoma Baptist.
ABOUT THE STARS: OCU fell 55-47 to 10th-ranked Texas Wesleyan on Nov. 24 in Fort Worth, Texas. The Stars (2-1) managed only 38.5 percent shooting from the floor.
Chris Brown, a 6-foot senior from Spencer, Okla., recorded a game-high 15 points to go with four rebounds. Brown knocked in 7 of his 13 field-goal attempts. Brown leads OCU with 19.3 points a game.
Corey Bingham, a 6-3 junior from Lynn, Mass., chipped in 12 points, six assists and three steals. Bingham averages 12.3 points, 6.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.33 steals a game. Bryant Williams, a 6-9 senior from Austin, Texas, tops NAIA Division I in blocked shots at 4.67 a game as OCU leads the NAIA with 7.67 blocks per game. OCU also ranks sixth nationally in field-goal percentage (51.7).
In the preseason, the Stars have been picked to finish sixth in the Sooner Athletic Conference. OCU has captured the SAC regular-season crown 13 times. OCU received votes in the preseason NAIA Division I rankings.
OCU leads the overall series against Oklahoma Baptist 60-45. Oklahoma Baptist beat the Stars 82-72 on Feb. 14 at the Noble Complex in the last meeting.
ABOUT THE BISON: Oklahoma Baptist trounced Manhattan Christian 98-55 on Monday in Shawnee, Okla. Oklahoma Baptist (6-0) nailed 9 of 20 3-point shots and 55.7 percent overall from the floor.
Nate Brumfield, a 6-4 senior, spearheaded the Bison with 26 points, six rebounds and three steals. Brumfield has been Oklahoma Baptist's ringleader with team highs in scoring (23.8 points a game), rebounding (8.8), assists (3.2) and steals (3.17). He ranks second in the NAIA with a 74.7 percent shooting percentage from the field.
A.J. Hawkins, a 6-5 senior, added 18 points, seven rebounds and three assists Monday. Hawkins records 18.8 points, 6.3 rebounds and 3.0 assists a game.
Oklahoma Baptist has been rated fourth in the preseason NAIA Division I rankings and installed as the preseason favorite to win the SAC.
ABOUT THE COACHES: Kevin Morrissey enters his first full season as OCU head coach. Morrissey spent the previous four seasons as St. Gregory's coach. He also has been an assistant at Missouri State and Texas-Pan American. Morrissey played his college ball at Oklahoma Baptist and Oral Roberts and high school at Bishop McGuinness in Oklahoma City.
Doug Tolin has led Oklahoma Baptist to a 254-69 record and nine consecutive national-tournament appearances in his 10th season. Tolin's overall coaching record stands at 574-295 in 32 years as a head coach.
