FULLERTON, Calif. – Oklahoma City University suffered a 73-64 setback to Azusa Pacific (Calif.) on Friday at Darling Pavilion in a matchup of top-15 women's basketball teams in NAIA Division I.
Laura Duncan, Lauren Gober and Holly Hardin recorded 14 points each to lead the seventh-ranked Stars (6-3). Twelfth-ranked Azusa Pacific went to 9-2.
Hardin, a senior from Chickasha, Okla., sank 7 of 11 shots from the floor and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds. Duncan, a senior from Edmond, Okla., dropped in four 3-pointers and notched five rebounds, while Gober, a freshman from Newcastle, Okla., hit all six of her field-goal attempts and pocketed a team-high five steals.
K.J. Johnson connected on all four of her shots from the floor to score eight points, while Starr Fairbanks added six rebounds.
OCU hit 66.7 percent of its shot attempts from the field in the first half, but still trailed 38-33 at halftime. The Stars' shooting percentage dipped to 39.7 percent in the second half.
Duncan's trey put the Stars ahead 13-10 for OCU's last lead of the game at 15:51 left in the first half. Alex Moore-Porter answered with a 3 to ignite an 11-0 Azusa Pacific run.
Hardin scored on a lay-in that cut OCU's deficit to 44-42 with 13:35 remaining in the contest. Azusa Pacific reeled off 15 consecutive points to build its largest lead of the game. C.J. Hill dropped in a 3-pointer to cap the Azusa run and put her team up 59-42 at the 10:16 mark.
The Stars whittled the margin to seven points as Hardin's bucket made the score 71-64 with 57 seconds left.
OCU finishes its West-Coast road swing against Hope International (Calif.) at 7:30 p.m. Oklahoma time Saturday at Darling Pavilion.
