OCU at Mid-America Christian men's basketball preview

THE MATCHUP:
Oklahoma City University pursues a Sooner Athletic Conference road victory when it squares off with Mid-America Christian.


ABOUT THE STARS: OCU won 67-48 over St. Gregory's on Saturday, Dec. 5 inside Abe Lemons Arena. The Stars (3-2, 1-1 SAC) cashed in 21 St. Gregory's turnovers to score 25 points and held St. Gregory's to 32.7 percent shooting from the field.

Chris Brown, a 6-foot senior from Spencer, Okla., poured in a season-high 29 points. He knocked in 10 of 18 shots from the floor and 8 of 10 free throws. Brown leads OCU with 20.0 points a game.

Corey Bingham, a 6-3 junior from Lynn, Mass., added 13 points. Bingham averages 12.2 points, 5.9 rebounds and 3.4 assists a game. Jerome Phillips, a 6-5 senior from Chickasha, Okla., tallied 10 points and 10 rebounds for his second career double-double. Phillips averages 12.0 points, 6.6 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.00 steal a game.

Al Graham, a 6-3 junior from Jackson, Miss., chipped in four points, four rebounds and 10 assists against St. Gregory's. Graham tops OCU with 4.4 assists a game.

In the preseason, the Stars have been picked to finish sixth in the Sooner Athletic Conference. OCU has captured the SAC regular-season crown 13 times. OCU received votes in the last NAIA Division I rankings.

The Stars have gone 9-0 against Mid-America Christian all-time. OCU beat Mid-America 72-62 on Feb. 16 at Abe Lemons Arena.


ABOUT THE EVANGELS: Mid-America Christian fell 92-70 to Oklahoma Baptist on Saturday, Dec. 5 in Shawnee, Okla. Mid-America (5-4, 1-1 SAC) hit 35.5 percent of its shots from the floor in the first half, then connected on 54.5 percent of its second-half attempts to finish with a 45.3 percent shooting percentage.

Brandon Williams, a 5-10 sophomore, led Mid-America with 15 points, while Jon Shodipo, a 6-5 junior, added 13 points. Charlie Shorter, a 6-foot sophomore, comes off the bench to score a team-high 14.9 points a game.

League coaches anticipated Mid-America Christian finishing 11th in the conference in the preseason.


ABOUT THE COACHES: Kevin Morrissey enters his first full season as OCU head coach. Morrissey spent the previous four seasons as St. Gregory's coach. He also has been an assistant at Missouri State and Texas-Pan American. Morrissey played his college ball at Oklahoma Baptist and Oral Roberts and high school at Bishop McGuinness in Oklahoma City.

Willie Holley is in his 36th season coaching at Mid-America Christian. Holley has a 706-455 career record. An NCCAA hall of famer, Holley guided Mid-America to NCCAA Division II titles in 1998, 2003, 2004 and 2007.
