Southern Nazarene edges OCU in five sets

Shelbey Veselka had 21 digs and five aces Monday.

BETHANY, Okla. – Oklahoma City University dropped a 25-23, 21-25, 16-25, 25-22, 15-13 verdict to Southern Nazarene on Monday at the Sawyer Center.

The Stars finished the regular season 18-19, 9-5 in the Sooner Athletic Conference. OCU competes next in the SAC Tournament on Friday and Saturday in Lubbock, Texas. Pairings will be determined after all conference matches are finished Tuesday.

Xiaoting Ma, a junior from Dalian, China, recorded 22 kills, 21 digs and four blocks to spearhead OCU. Samantha Ball, a sophomore from Boerne, Texas, added 49 assists, six digs and two blocks.

Shelbey Veselka picked up 21 digs to go with five aces, and Alex Benbrook chipped in 14 kills and four blocks. Victoria Cross tallied 13 digs, and Adrienne Tillery had 10 kills, seven digs and three blocks.

The fifth set featured 13 ties. OCU led 11-10 on Jeannee Campbell's kill, but Southern Nazarene's Ellen Martin answered with a kill.

Leslie Riepl put Southern Nazarene 13-12 on a kill, and Ma tied the set 13-13 with a kill. After an OCU service error, Ma's attack found the net for Southern Nazarene's match-clinching point.
