OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University withstood a late rally from Langston to win 82-73 on Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
The Stars, ranked eighth in NAIA Division I women's basketball, began the season with a victory. Langston dropped to 0-2.
Donica Cosby, a junior from Coldwater, Miss., spearheaded OCU with 20 points and 10 assists. Chontaye Walter, a senior from Oklahoma City, added 18 points and three rebounds.
Lauren Gober, a freshman from Newcastle, Okla., chipped in 11 points and four rebounds. Holly Hardin led OCU with eight rebounds.
OCU built a 52-29 advantage with 17:01 remaining in the game on Cosby's lay-in. Langston chipped away at the Stars' lead from there.
Langston sliced its deficit to 66-56 after Sanetra Jackson's 3-pointer capped an 8-0 Langston run. Langston drew to within 73-69 with 1:46 left.
OCU responded by hitting 7 of 8 free throws down the stretch. Cosby nailed 4 out of 4 from the line, and Walter went 3-for-4.
In the first half, OCU hit 52.8 percent from the field, but shot only 39.3 percent in the second period. OCU held a 16-6 advantage in points in transition.
The Stars meet Central Oklahoma at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Abe Lemons Arena.
