SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. – Oklahoma City University recorded its third Sooner Athletic Conference volleyball victory in a row, beating John Brown (Ark.) 25-21, 25-20, 25-14 on Tuesday at Murray Sells Gymnasium.
Xiaoting Ma pounded down 17 kills to lead the Stars, who moved to 17-18, 8-4 in the SAC.
Ma, a junior from Dalian, China, added seven digs and two blocks, while Alex Benbrook, a sophomore from Enid, Okla., notched 11 kills and five blocks, three solo for the Stars. Shelbey Veselka, a junior from Boerne, Texas, had a match-high 20 digs.
Samantha Ball dished out 33 assists to go with seven digs, while Elizabeth Hendrix picked up 15 digs. Victoria Cross chipped in 10 digs.
OCU trailed only once in the match. During the second set, John Brown erased a 6-2 deficit with five consecutive points. Ma broke that string with a kill. OCU used kills by Ma, Adrienne Tillery and Ball to build a 13-9 edge.
The Stars reeled off 10 points in a row to begin the third set. Benbrook had two kills, and Ball and Ma added kills. Ma's kill put OCU up 10-0. Taylor Rowton set down the match-clinching kill.
OCU meets Mid-America Christian at 7 p.m. Thursday in senior night at Abe Lemons Arena.
