OKLAHOMA CITY ? Oklahoma City University used a 21-1 first-half run to ignite a 109-44 runaway over Oklahoma Wesleyan on Saturday night at Abe Lemons Arena.
Oklahoma Wesleyan gave away 37 turnovers, on which OCU scored 47 of its points.
Alexandra Kotta, a senior from Germantown, Md., had 25 points, seven rebounds and five steals to spearhead the Stars.
Mikelle Brown added 18 points and six rebounds on 7-of-8 shooting from the field for the Stars.
OCU, ranked third in NAIA Division I, improved to 3-0 on the season. Oklahoma Wesleyan fell to 2-3.
?Alex and Mikelle get more production per minute than most players,? OCU coach
Rob Edmisson said. ?A lot of Alex?s baskets were leakouts into transition. She didn?t just rely on her 3-point shot.?
Up 20-9, the Stars started its 21-1 run on Kotta?s jump shot with 11:08 left in the first half. Kotta scored seven points, and Oklahoma Wesleyan committed seven turnovers during the spree.
Viola Beybeyah ended the run on a putback basket that put OCU?s lead at 41-10 with 5:03 left in the first half.
?One through 10, there?s not much dropoff for us,? Edmissson said. ?Viola and
Angela Kalanoska kept our level of play up. It?s tough to measure our level of play right now, but our girls focused well tonight.?
The Stars committed only nine turnovers. OCU guards
Zanita Johnson and
Chelsea Ledbetter did not give away the ball Saturday.
?We valued the ball,? Edmisson said.
OCU travels to play Concordia (Texas) at 7 p.m. Friday in Austin, Texas.
