OKLAHOMA CITY ? Oklahoma City University put together an 11-0 scoring run midway through the second half to make the difference in a 62-50 women's basketball victory over Central Oklahoma on Tuesday at Abe Lemons Arena.
Fabiana Araujo started the run with two free throws at the 16:15 mark to put OCU up 31-30.
Chelsea Ledbetter hit a 3-pointer, and
Mariam Sy added a bucket and two free throws. Then
Zanita Johnson sank a layup to put OCU up 40-30 with 13:41 left in the game.
Sy, a senior from Mali, West Africa, recorded 20 points, nine rebounds and five steals. Overall, though, OCU coach
Rob Edmisson said the seventh-ranked Stars (2-0) had an uneven night.
?In totality, I thought we played 10 minutes of good basketball,? Edmisson said. ?I guess that 10 minutes was good enough to win.?
Edmisson attributed the 11-0 run to putting defensive pressure on UCO. The pressure threw UCO off rhythm offensively.
?The tempo picked up, and they shot quickly,? Edmisson said. ?Hopefully we don?t have to do that all time. If we do that, our legs will fall off.?
Paty Silva scored 10 points despite a rolled ankle suffered Saturday, and Araujo added 11 points and nine rebounds. For UCO,
Lizzie Brenner, Meghan Craig and
Lindsey Wilson each scored 10 points.
OCU will play next in the Doane Classic in Crete, Neb. The Stars play Hastings (Neb.) at 6 p.m. Friday and Doane (Neb.) at 4 p.m. Saturday.
