Most golfers have a go-to club in their bag. Jessica Schiele is no different.
Schiele, a golfer at Oklahoma City University, has used her go-to club to win three straight tournaments and lead the OCU squad to two first-place finishes. The junior from Grimsby, North East Lincolnshire, England, became the first OCU women's golfer to take three wins in a row in earning this week’s Super Star of the week.
“I’d have to say the driver,” Schiele said when asked her favorite club. “I drive the ball pretty good. My putter sometimes if I’m rolling the ball pretty well, I feel like I can hole a lot of puts.”
Schiele won the Lady Chap Fall Invitational by eight strokes, the Oral Roberts Shootout by one stroke and the OCU Stars Fall Classic by two strokes.
“The margin of victory was definitely my biggest highlight,” Schiele said. “A lot of the tournaments were actually major, and there were three rounds. I’m really proud of my coach for being so proud of me for my performance and for getting two team wins of those three too.”
Schiele began playing golf at a young age.
“I started at the age of 10, and since then I’ve had golf lessons until I was roughly 18, that is when I first came out here,” Schiele said. “Being at Redlands first, coming into a daily plan of golf and physical fitness, certainly enhanced my game a lot more, and obviously coming here has been a lot tougher and I have worked out pretty hard and stayed dedicated to my game.”
Schiele picked OCU after playing at Redlands because of the school’s championship tradition.
“Mainly the national championships and of course the golf program is pretty good,” Schiele said. “And I like Coach McCauley too. He is an excellent guy, and he knows what he is talking about.”
Schiele chose kinesiology as a major at OCU because of the different options it provides.
“Originally I wanted to be a physical therapist, and I kind of still do,” Schiele said. “Lately I have been more into the sports psychology, so kinesiology is kind of a base leading up to that.”
Being from England has given Schiele the opportunity to visit St. Andrews, one of her favorite courses.
“It’s the home of golf,” Schiele said. “I have been up there a couple of times to watch the Open, and it is truly an amazing place, and hopefully one day I’ll actually get to play there.”
