Adam Black didn’t come to Oklahoma City University with the goal of leading the men’s soccer team in goals.
Fourteen goals later, Black is a two-time Sooner Athletic Conference offensive player of the week and this week’s Super Star of the week.
“I think at the start it was just to do well and settle in and hopefully get a few goals,” Black said. “I didn’t think I’d do as well as I have done so far, but it always a bonus to get a few goals.”
The sophomore forward from Liverpool, England, scored 14 goals in 17 games for the Stars, including game-winning penalty kicks against Mid-America Christian and Science and Arts of Oklahoma.
“There is a lot of pressure on you to get the winning goal,” Black said. “You just have to be confident enough, and when you get those chances you have take them.”
Black scored over half of OCU’s goals this season, but didn’t feel any pressure to have to score for the Stars to win.
“I don’t think there is any pressure,” Black said. “Every time you score you think about the next game going into it with confidence that you’re going to score again, which is always good to have as a striker.”
Black joins the Stars from England, but ended up in Oklahoma City after playing in a tournament in Dallas.
“I played in the Dallas Cup in April and did pretty well,” Black said. “Coach Harvey got in touch with me and described the program and it sounded interesting, and a few lads from Liverpool had been here before and they recommended it to me so it was an easy decision really.”
There were small adjustments Black had to make to become the player he is now.
“The way the game is played in America is different from back home,” Black said. “It is a lot more physical, but I think I have adapted quite well to that.”
