Pike no-hits Southwestern Christian in 18-0 OCU win

Senior from Southampton, N.Y., permits one walk Friday

OKLAHOMA CITY – Chris Pike of Oklahoma City University followed up his perfect game from last week with a no-hitter Friday in an 18-0 victory against Southwestern Christian at Dolese Park.
Pike, a senior right-hander from Southampton, N.Y., struck out 17 with one walk in seven innings Friday. Southwestern Christian split the doubleheader and won 1-0 in the second game. OCU, ranked fifth in NAIA baseball, went to 17-5, 8-1 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
Oklahoma City coach Denney Crabaugh had thrown consecutive no-hitters in his college career pitching for Southeastern Oklahoma State. Pike fanned 18 in seven perfect innings against St. Gregory's on March 7 at Jim Wade Stadium. Crabaugh said of the 24th perfect game in NAIA baseball history, "It was the most dominating performance I've ever seen by a pitcher, period."
"Welcome to the club," Crabaugh said. "It was another dominating performance. He was in total control."
Pike completed his latest gem using 85 pitches. Pike improved to 4-1 on the year. Pike started the game off by retiring Southwestern Christian in order in the first by two groundouts and a strikeout.
Aaron Ibarra of Southwestern Christian drew a walk in the bottom of the second to snap Pike's streak of retiring 29 batters in a row dating back to his outing at USAO on Feb. 28 in Chickasha, Okla.
Pike fanned 13 Eagles in a row from the last two outs of the bottom of the second to the second out of the sixth. Pike struck out the side in the third, fourth, fifth and seventh. He set down the final 18 batters he faced all in a row.
Kyle Lacy and Ryan Wright hit home runs in support of Pike. Wright hammered a grand slam past the right-field fence as part of the Stars' eight-run uprising in the third, while Lacy nailed a three-run blast to right-center in the fourth.
Lacy, a sophomore from Edmond, Okla., went 3-for-3, scored three times and drove in five runs, while Wright, a junior from Fruitland, Idaho, was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and four RBIs. Connor Lynch, a junior from Marietta, Ga., went 3-for-4 with two runs driven in.
In the second game Friday, Forrest Weaver blanked OCU on five hits in seven innings. The Stars' Michael Nolan limited Southwestern Christian to one run on four hits in seven frames with 11 strikeouts.
Logan Sprinkle led off the top of the sixth with a base hit. Tanner Kirk took Sprinkle's place on the basepaths, then made it to second base on Tyler Meacham's infield single. Kirk stole third, then reached home on a dropped third strike and an error.
OCU faces Midland (Neb.) in a 3 p.m. doubleheader Monday at Jim Wade Stadium. Pike would be expected to take the mound next in the Stars' next conference series against Oklahoma Baptist on March 20-22.
