OCU knocks off Rogers State 3-1, 6-3

SAC Tournament takes place at Jim Wade Stadium from Wednesday to Friday

OKLAHOMA CITY – Top-ranked Oklahoma City University completed the regular season with 3-1 and 6-3 victories over Rogers State on Sunday at Jim Wade Stadium in a contest featuring top 25-ranked teams in NAIA baseball.
Forrest Smith and Jonathan Rodriguez nailed home runs in the first game, while the Stars put together a five-run first inning in the second. OCU improved to 44-10, 23-5 in the SAC, while 23rd-ranked Rogers State dipped to 31-20, 15-13 in the SAC.
The Stars, the regular-season league champions, look forward to the SAC Tournament starting Wednesday at Jim Wade Stadium. Pairings for the tournament will be announced Monday.
Smith hammered a fly ball that carried past the left-field wall, breaking a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the fifth. Rodriguez pounded a drive that flew over the net in right to put OCU ahead 3-1 in the sixth.
Chris Munoz produced the Stars' first run of the day by socking a double to right-center to score Smith in the third. Rogers State's Alex Cochran scored on a wild pitch in the top of the fifth.
Smith, a junior from Bakersfield, Calif., hit his 10th homer of the year, went 1-for-1 and scored twice, while Muñoz, a senior from Hacienda Heights, Calif., went 1-for-2 with an RBI and his 15th double of the season. Rodriguez, a junior from Anaheim, Calif., hit his third homer of the year.
OCU increased its season total to 62 homers, which ranks second in the NAIA.
Shane Henderson improved to 4-0 on the year. Henderson, a junior right-hander from Flower Mound, Texas, notched season highs in innings pitched (seven), strikeouts (nine) and pitches thrown (95) while recording his first complete game of the year. He lowered his earned run average to 1.06.
In the second game, Josh Dickey's RBI single to center provided the Stars with a 5-0 first-inning advantage. Kale Gaden swatted a base hit past the second baseman to put OCU on the board first.
Rodriguez scored on a passed ball to make OCU's lead 2-0. Smith drove in two runs with a base hit to right.
Rogers State scored three unanswered runs, cutting its deficit to 5-3 in the fifth on Colton Campbell's two-run blast to left. Cody Ferrell reached home plate on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth to put the Stars in front 6-3.
Gaden, a senior from Stillwater, Okla., went 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Rodriguez went 2-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base. Ferrell, a senior from McLoud, Okla., was 1-for-3 with a steal and two runs scored, while Smith was 1-for-3 with a run scored and two RBIs.
Ryan Gibson picked up the victory, improving to 4-2. Gibson, a senior left-hander from Yukon, Okla., fanned a season-high 10 in five innings while allowing three runs on six hits, three walks and a hit batsman. Patrick Goelz came on in the sixth to strike out the side, two looking. Davis Henderson nabbed his seventh save of 2013 by working the seventh.
