Stars capture SAC regular-season title

OCU wins nightcap 7-1 after falling 6-4

CLAREMORE, Okla. – No. 1-ranked Oklahoma City University won its third consecutive Sooner Athletic Conference regular-season baseball title with a 7-1 victory over Rogers State after being stunned 6-4 on Thursday at the Hillcat Complex in a clash of top 25-ranked teams in the NAIA.
Jonathan Rodriguez and Jonathan Sigado drove in two runs each in the nightcap, while Rogers State struck for three sixth-inning runs to overcome a 4-3 deficit in the first game. The Stars went to 42-10, 21-5 in the Sooner Athletic Conference, while 23rd-ranked Rogers State moved to 31-18, 15-11 in the SAC.
OCU owns a three-and-a-half game lead in the SAC standings with two to go.
In the second game, OCU plated three runs in the sixth to put away the game. Cody Ferrell reached home plate on a wild pitch, then Sigado knocked in a run on a single to left field. Chase Jensen scored on Josh Dickey's squeeze bunt for a 7-1 OCU advantage.
The Stars scored single runs in the first, third, fourth and fifth innings. Rodriguez nailed an RBI single in the first to bring home Chris Munoz. Munoz scored on an error in the third.
Sigado put OCU ahead 3-0 in the fourth with a sacrifice fly. Munoz scored for the third time in the game on Rodriguez's sacrifice fly in the fifth.
Munoz, a senior from Hacienda Heights, Calif., went 2-for-3 with a double, while Sigado, a senior from Salem, Ore., went 1-for-1 with two RBIs. Ferrell, a senior from McLoud, Okla., went 2-for-4 with a stolen base and a run scored, and Rodriguez, a junior from Anaheim, Calif., was 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Jensen, a senior from Arlington, Texas, went 1-for-2 with two runs scored and a steal.
Cody Crabaugh limited Rogers State to a run on a hit and two walks in six innings. Crabaugh, a senior from Edmond, Okla., fanned five while dealing 101 pitches. Crabaugh improved to 12-1. Ricky Spain retired Rogers State in order in the seventh.
In the first game, OCU went ahead 3-1 in the second. Jensen scored on a fielder's choice grounder, then Munoz brought in two runs on a base hit to right.
The Stars broke a 3-3 deadlock as Forrest Smith nailed a fourth-inning RBI single to right. Jensen doubled to lead off the inning before scoring on Smith's base hit.
Alex Cochran scored on Brandon Bargas' squeeze play to tie the game for Rogers State in the sixth. Emmanuel De La Cruz drove in the go-ahead run on a single to right-center. Hector Rivera tacked on a bases-loaded walk for a 6-4 Rogers State advantage.
Shawn Spainhoward earned the victory with a complete-game performance, allowing four runs on eight hits. Derek Howell took the loss the Stars, falling to 9-2.
Jensen went 1-for-3 with a double and two runs scored, and Smith, a junior from Bakersfield, Calif., went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Ferrell and Sigado each went 1-for-3 with a run scored. Walker Davidson went 1-for-2.
OCU meets Rogers State in a 2 p.m. doubleheader Saturday at Jim Wade Stadium. It will be senior day for the Stars as OCU's 13 seniors will be recognized.
