Stars drop St. Gregory’s 8-5, 14-6

OCU got clutch home runs from Drew Wright and Magean De La Torre and swept St. Gregory's

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University completed a four-game sweep of St. Gregory's winning 8-5, 14-6 Friday at Ann Lacy Stadium.
The Stars, ranked No. 7 in NAIA softball, outhit the 12th-ranked Cavaliers 29-12 to complete the sweep and move to 40-10 overall and 16-4 in Sooner Athletic Conference play.
In the first game, Drew Wright put the Stars on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first with an RBI double to left-center field.
St. Gregory's answered with a pair of runs scored on an OCU error and took a 2-1 lead in the top of the second.
In the bottom of the third, Wright slugged a grand-slam home run over the right-field fence. Angela Lovelady and Emily Krienke followed with one RBI apiece to give the Stars a 7-2 advantage.
Magean De La Torre drove in Kayley Humann in the bottom of the sixth to push the OCU lead to 8-2.
Caitlin O'Hagan clubbed a three-run homer in the top of the seventh, but Jamie Rateliff closed the door on the Cavaliers and gave the Stars the 8-5 victory.
Rateliff allowed three runs on three hits with six strikeouts and picked up the win to move to 16-2 on the season.
The Cavaliers took a one-run lead when Melanie Gladden scored on a wild pitch in the top of the first of game No. 2.
De La Torre evened the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the first with an RBI single up the middle.
Back-to-back RBI doubles from Allison Conyers and Gladden put St. Gregory's back on top 3-1 in the top of the second.
OCU responded with a pair of RBI singles from Shelbi Legg and Kyndra Holasek and tied the score at 3-3 after two innings of play.
The Cavaliers retook the lead in the top of the third when Whitney Anderson smacked a solo home run to right center.
The Stars pushed four runs across in the bottom of the third. Rateliff singled and drove in a run and Legg singled and plated two more to give OCU a 7-4 advantage.
St. Gregory's answered with a pair of run in the top of fourth and cut the Stars' lead to 7-6.
OCU broke the game open with five runs in the bottom of the fifth. De La Torre capped the inning with a two-run home run to center to stake the Stars to a 12-6 lead.
A pair of sacrifice flies from De La Torre and Wright in the bottom of the sixth gave OCU the 14-6 run-rule victory.
Emily Krienke started and allowed four runs on three hits with one strikeout in two innings. Rateliff allowed two runs in four innings of relief and picked up the win to move to 17-2.
De La Torre and Wright led the Stars at the dish with five RBIs apiece.
OCU will return to action in a 5 p.m. doubleheader against No. 19 Rogers State on April 23 at the Diamond Sports Complex in Claremore, Okla.
