Stars drop pair to Lubbock Christian

OCU lost the first game 15-4 and the second 5-4

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University dropped both ends of a doubleheader 15-4, 5-4 to third-ranked Lubbock Christian (Texas) Saturday at Ann Lacy Stadium.
The Stars, ranked No. 6 in NAIA softball, were outhit 28-16 by the Lady Chaps and move to 36-10 overall and 12-4 in Sooner Athletic Conference play.
Lubbock Christian pushed five runs across in the top of the first inning. Latainna Eltsosie drove in two runs with a single up the middle and Stephanie Rendon, Ashton Bell and Genevieve Estrada all drove in runs to give the Lady Chaps a 5-0 lead.
OCU responded with three runs in the bottom half of the first. Drew Wright and Magean De La Torre each hit a sacrifice fly to left field to plate two runs. Angela Lovelady capped the inning with a single that scored LeeAnn Lopez and made the score 5-3.
Courtney McGee clubbed a two-run home run to left in the top of the second and Bell homered to center in the top of the third to stretch the Lubbock Christian lead to 8-3.
The Lady Chaps added three runs in the top of the fourth and four more in the top of the seventh to take the 15-4 victory.
Rendon put the Lady Chaps on top in game No. 2 with a two-run homer in the top of the fourth.
OCU responded with a pair runs to tie the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth. Wright singled to left center to plate Tori Joyner and Kayley Humann followed with an RBI single to center field that scored Kyndra Holasek.
A McKenzie Clemmons sacrifice fly to center gave Lubbock Christian a 3-2 lead in the top of the sixth.
In the bottom of the sixth, Holasek homered over the fight-field fence to even the score at 3-3. Later in the inning, Wright scored on a passed ball and gave the Stars a 4-3 advantage.
Lubbock Christian responded with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to retake the lead 5-4.
OCU had runners on the corners with no outs in the bottom of the seventh, but failed to push a run across and fell 5-4.
Jamie Rateliff allowed five runs on 10 hits with two strikeouts in seven innings of work. The sophomore from Mustang, Okla., was saddled with both loses and moves to 14-2 on the season.
Wright led the Stars at the plate with two RBIs on the day.
OCU will return to action in a 2 p.m. doubleheader against St. Gregory's on April 16 in Shawnee, Okla.
