Stars blank St. Gregory's 12-0, 3-0

Howell, Crabaugh twirl OCU's fifth, sixth shutouts this year

SHAWNEE, Okla. – Derek Howell notched a no-hitter in the first game, while Cody Crabaugh pitched a two-hit shutout in the second as Oklahoma City University swept St. Gregory's 12-0, 3-0 on Wednesday at Bill Nicklas Field.
Howell, a senior right-hander from Krum, Texas, surrendered two walks as Matt Blackwell reached base on Jonathan Sigado's error in the fourth inning. Crabaugh, a senior from Edmond, Okla., had the second complete-game shutout of his OCU career. The Stars, ranked fourth in NAIA baseball, moved to 24-6, 4-2 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
Howell (5-1) retired nine batters in a row from the first to the third innings. Howell worked 1-2-3 innings in the second, third and fifth. He finished his third complete game of the year in 91 pitches and lowered his earned run average to 1.07.
Ben Langridge posted OCU's last no-hitter in an 11-0 victory over Rogers State on April 17, 2007 in Claremore, Okla.
OCU buried St. Gregory's under a 10-run seventh. Chris Muñoz belted a three-run home run over the right-field fence to give the Stars a 12-0 advantage.
Jonathan Rodriguez pounded an RBI double to put OCU in front 3-0. Josh Dickey added a sacrifice fly, and Rodriguez scored on Sigado's infield hit. Kale Gaden's two-run double chased St. Gregory's starting pitcher Ben Moore and gave the Stars a 7-0 advantage. OCU scored twice more on errors.
Chase Jensen scored OCU's first run after leading off the game with a single. Jensen reached home on Blackwell's error.      
The Stars went up 2-0 in the third as Muñoz drove in Jensen with a base hit along the left-field foul line.
Gaden, a senior from Stillwater, Okla., went 3-for-3 with three doubles and two RBIs, and Muñoz, a senior from Hacienda Heights, Calif., was 2-for-4, scored a run and drove in four runs. Jensen, a senior from Arlington, Texas, scored four times and went 2-for-4, while Rodriguez, a junior from Anaheim, Calif., went 2-for-5 with a run scored, a double and an RBI. The Stars scored double-digit runs for the 10th time this season.
Crabaugh (7-1) went perfect through 2.1 innings before allowing Christian Torres' single. Crabaugh set down eight consecutive hitters before Chris Sutton's base hit leading off the bottom of the sixth. Crabaugh logged 75 pitches in his second complete game of the year.
Walker Davidson tripled along the right-field foul line in the first. Davidson scored on Muñoz's fly ball to left. Cody Ferrell reached home on Sigado's grounder in the second.
OCU took a 3-0 lead in the seventh. Brayden Brumley hammered a triple to deep right, then scored on Jensen's squeeze-play bunt.
Ferrell, a senior from McLoud, Okla., was 2-for-3 with a run scored, and Davidson, a senior from Berryhill, Okla., went 2-for-4 and scored a run.
The Stars face St. Gregory's in a 2 p.m. doubleheader Saturday at Jim Wade Stadium.
