Theus paces Stars in Reno Tournament of Champions

Reno Tournament of Champions featured several ranked wrestlers

Destin Theus improved to 4-7 on the season.
RENO, Nev. – Destin Theus led Oklahoma City University in the 19th annual Reno Tournament of Champions with a 3-2 performance Sunday at the Reno Events Center.
Other Stars notching wins in the tournament were Adrian Gaines, James Landoll, Cody Sivertsen and Derek Sivertsen.
The tournament field included several ranked individuals from across the nation and several levels. Ranked teams that were in the field included NCAA Division I teams Nebraska (eighth), Stanford (18th) and Oregon State (24th) and Adams State (Colo.), ranked sixth in NCAA Division II. Ranked NAIA teams included second-ranked Montana State-Northern and seventh-ranked Southern Oregon in addition to No. 19 OCU.
Theus, a sophomore 285-pounder from River Ridge, La., opened his day with a 3-0 win over Tyler Sherman, wrestling unattached from Oregon State. Spencer Empey of Cal Poly knocked Theus into the consolation rounds.
In the consolations, Theus won 6-1 over Jordan Karst of Utah Valley and picked up an injury-forfeit win. Theus fell 8-3 to A.J. Vizcarrondo of West Virginia.
At 197, Cody Sivertsen beat Alex Encarnacion of CSU Bakersfield 9-5. Sivertsen is ranked 13th among NAIA 184-pounders.
OCU returns to action in the Midland Warrior Classic Open at 9 a.m. Jan. 4 in Fremont, Neb.
