Pontikes of OCU cops academic all-American honors

Stars graduate Pontikes adds to academic awards

Andrew Pontikes, who is headed to medical school, became a four-time NWCA all-academic choice and two-time NAIA scholar-athlete award winner.
OKLAHOMA CITY – Andrew Pontikes of Oklahoma City University made CoSIDA academic all-American on the college-division at-large third team.
Pontikes, a senior from Elgin, Okla., became a three-time qualifier for the NAIA wrestling championships with the Stars. Pontikes sported a 3.63 cumulative grade-point average before graduating with his biology degree.
In 2011-12, Pontikes finished with an 18-24 record, two falls and three wins by major decision. Pontikes took fifth at 184 pounds in the NAIA Central Qualifying Group Tournament on Feb. 18 in Des Moines, Iowa. Pontikes placed in five tournaments this season. In his four-year OCU career, Pontikes posted 57 wins and 12 pins.
Pontikes earned academic all-district recognition to be considered for all-American honors. Pontikes became a four-time NWCA all-academic and two-time NAIA scholar-athlete award winner. He will pursue his education in medical school.
The men's academic all-American at-large program recognizes athletes from fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming and diving, tennis, water polo, volleyball and wrestling.
To be eligible for academic all-America honors, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his current institution and be nominated by his sports information director.
OCU has more academic all-Americans all-time than any other NAIA institution. Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed academic all-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
The fifth-ranked Stars registered their finest national finish in program history at fifth place in the NAIA Championships team standings. OCU (10-5 in duals) had four all-Americans, including its first national champion, Kevin Hardy at 165 pounds.
OCU hosts the Junior National Duals through Saturday.
