Stars split doubleheader with Rogers State

OCU falls 3-1, then wins 6-5 in extra innings

Cody Ferrell scored the go-ahead run in OCU's 6-5 win over Rogers State Saturday.
CLAREMORE, Okla. – Second-ranked Oklahoma City University fell 3-1 then picked up a 6-5 extra-innings win over Rogers State in a doubleheader Saturday at Hillcat Complex.
The split moves the Stars, ranked No. 2 in NAIA baseball, to 30-7 overall and 18-3 in Sooner Athletic Conference play.
A three-run home run gave Rogers State a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning of game one.
Cody Ferrell doubled to right field in the top of the seventh and was driven in by Jonathan Sigado to make the score 3-1. The Stars failed to continue the rally and fell 3-1.
Starting pitcher Blake Schwartz surrendered three runs on three hits in 5.1 innings of work. The right-hander struck out six, but was saddled with the loss to move to 7-2 on the season.
Dane Phillips gave OCU a 1-0 lead in game No. 2 with an RBI single to right in the top of the first.
After Rogers State took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth, Chad Carman doubled to right-center field to drive in Ferrell and tie the game at 2-2.
Rogers State scored runs in the bottom of fifth and sixth innings to regain the lead and make the score 5-2.
Chris Muñoz scored when Kale Gaden was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the top of the seventh. Later in the inning, Brayden Brumley scored on a fielder's choice and Phillips scored on a wild pitch to tie the score at 5-5.
Ferrell scored the go-ahead run on a fielder's choice in the top of the eighth to give OCU a 6-5 advantage.
Reliever Patrick Goelz retired the Hillcats in order in the bottom of the eighth to give OCU the 6-5 victory.
Goelz tossed 2.2 scoreless innings and picked up the win to move to 2-0 on the season.
The Stars will return to action against Oklahoma Christian at 7 p.m. Thursday at Jim Wade Stadium.
