OCU pounds St. Gregory's 9-2, 9-1

Third-ranked Stars prevail in NAIA's featured softball contests of week

Angela Lovelady nailed a grand slam Thursday for her fourth home run of the year.
SHAWNEE, Okla. – Oklahoma City University pummeled St. Gregory's 9-2, 9-1 on Thursday at St. Gregory's Complex in the NAIA softball games of the week.
The third-ranked Stars pounded 17 hits on the day. OCU improved to 22-16, 9-3 in the Sooner Athletic Conference, while 11th-ranked St. Gregory's went to 31-6, 5-5.
In the first game, OCU plated six runs in the sixth for the final margin. Katie Proffitt touched off the Stars' outburst with an RBI double. Lily LaVelle drew a walk to load the bases for Angela Lovelady.
Lovelady hammered a 3-2 pitch beyond the left-field fence for a grand slam and a 9-2 lead.
In the fourth, Proffitt broke a 1-1 tie after knocking in two runs on a single to center field. OCU tied the game on LaVelle's RBI double in the third.
Proffitt, a senior from Tulsa, Okla., went 2-for-4 with a run scored and three RBIs, while Kylee Rounsaville, a sophomore from Yukon, Okla., was 2-for-4 and scored twice. Lovelady, a junior from El Cajon, Calif., nailed her fourth home run of the year. Danielle Fox, a sophomore from Yukon, Okla., went 2-for-4 and scored a run.
LaVelle, a senior from Bridge Creek, Okla., struck out 10 and allowed two runs on three hits and three walks. LaVelle increased her record to 25-1 while notching her 16th complete game of the year.
In the second game, the Stars created a 9-0 margin on Jamie Rateliff's RBI base hit in the sixth. Magean De La Torre drove in two runs on a single into left field earlier in the inning.
OCU took a first-inning 3-0 advantage. De La Torre drew a bases-full walk, then Rounsaville knocked in two runs on a single to left.
The Stars had a three-run fourth. LaVelle brought in a run on a sacrifice fly. LeeAnn Lopez upped OCU's lead to 6-0 with a two-run base hit to left.
Tori Joyner scored three times, stole two bases while drawing two walks. De La Torre went 1-for-3 with three RBIs, while Rounsaville went 1-for-4 with two RBIs. Lopez was 1-for-2 with two runs scored and two runs brought in.
A.J. Woodward improved to 8-1 on the year. Woodward, a senior from Menifee, Calif., allowed one run on three hits while fanning two. Woodward carried a no-hitter through 5.1 innings.
OCU squares off with Friends (Kan.) in a 5 p.m. doubleheader April 12 at Ann Lacy Stadium.
