Top-ranked OCU pulls off SAC women's golf title

Stars capture 10th league championship in 11 years

The Stars bested a field of six nationally ranked teams in securing OCU's 10th league crown.
OKLAHOMA CITY – No. 1-ranked Oklahoma City University posted a seven-shot win in the Sooner Athletic Conference Women's Golf Championships on Tuesday at Lincoln Park Golf Course.
OCU won the league title for the 10th time in 11 years with a team score of 299-301–600. The Stars secured the SAC's automatic berth to the NAIA Championships, set for May 15-18 at Link Hills Golf and Country Club in Greeneville, Tenn.
The Stars' Jessica Schiele picked up runner-up honors with a 72-72–144 performance. Schiele, a junior from Grimsby, North East Lincolnshire, England, finished with 26 pars and five birdies in the 36 holes.
Schiele has finished no worse than a tie for eighth in OCU's nine events this season. She notched her second runner-up finish this spring by two strokes to Oklahoma Christian's Anna Arrese.
OCU had three all-conference performers as Mary Larsh carded a fourth-place 75-73–148, and Taylor Howard contributed a 76-74–150 to tie for sixth. Howard, a junior from Ada, Okla., and Larsh, a junior from Edmond, Okla., buried four birdies each.
The Stars made 16 birdies and made par 112 times as a team on the par-72, 6,004-yard layout.
"I was really happy with the determination of the girls," OCU coach Marty McCauley said. "It was the best overall team performance that we've turned in this year. Everyone contributed and was a factor in the victory."
The tournament featured six teams ranked in the NAIA top 25. No. 11-ranked Oklahoma Christian had a team score of 607, one shot better than No. 8 Lubbock Christian (Texas). No. 16 Wayland Baptist (Texas) was fourth at 613, followed by No. 20 Southern Nazarene (625), No. 24 Oklahoma Baptist and Rogers State (both at 647) and Northwestern Oklahoma State (723).
"I feel like we've played a tough schedule to this point, which really helped us out today to stay patient and finish strong," McCauley said. "The conference is so good. There were five or six teams who had a good opportunity to win, so to hold on and win is very special."
OCU's 301 ended up a shot ahead of Oklahoma Christian and two strokes in front of Lubbock Christian for the day.
The temperature started the day at 55 degrees with calm winds. The high temperature was 73 degrees.
"That's one thing we try to do is make sure that everybody is focused on taking care of their own business," McCauley said. "It all adds up in the end."
Other all-conference players were Lubbock Christian's Anna Schopp (147), Sarah Helly of Wayland Baptist (149) and Southern Nazarene's Erika Dolezelova and OC's Morgan Dockery, who finished tied for sixth.
Oklahoma Christian's Greg Lynn, who guided the Lady Eagles to a No. 11 national ranking in the program's first season of existence, was voted by his peers as the SAC coach of the year.
