Stars post 9-2 romp over OBU

Top-ranked OCU knocks out 11 hits in victory over ninth-ranked OBU

Chris Muñoz cranked out three hits, scored two runs and notched his 11th double of the year Friday.
OKLAHOMA CITY – Top-ranked Oklahoma City University prevailed 9-2 over Oklahoma Baptist on Friday at Jim Wade Stadium in a matchup of top 10-ranked teams in NAIA baseball.
Miguel Beltran and Chad Carman crushed home runs for OCU. The Stars improved to 24-5, 12-1 in the Sooner Athletic Conference, while ninth-ranked Oklahoma Baptist fell to 26-4, 8-2.
OCU banged out 11 hits and scored seven unanswered runs to finish the game. Beltran cranked a 3-1 fastball over the right-field wall for a two-run home run to break a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the third inning. Beltran hit his 13th homer of the season.
Carman added a solo shot to left in the seventh for his fourth homer of the year for the final margin.
Rich Hawkins picked up the victory to move to 7-1. Hawkins, a senior left-hander from Edmond, Okla., worked eight innings, scattered 11 hits and struck out seven. Hawkins logged 112 pitches. Will Patrigo pitched the ninth and fanned two, including a strikeout of Michael Sliger to end the game.
The Stars erased a 1-0 deficit in the bottom of the second. Jonathan Sigado tied the game 1-1 with a base hit to right. Hawkins scored on a passed ball to put OCU up 2-1.
In the fourth, Dane Phillips put OCU ahead 6-2 by nailing a two-run double that hugged the right-field foul line.
Brian Fisher hammered a double to the deep corner of left field to give OCU a 7-2 advantage in the fifth. Fisher scored off a double-play ball to put the Stars up 8-2.
Chris Muñoz, a junior from Hacienda Heights, Calif., went 3-for-5 and scored twice for the Stars. Beltran, a senior from Long Beach, Calif., scored three times and went 1-for-2 with two runs driven in, while Phillips, a junior from Nacogdoches, Texas, was 1-for-5 with two RBIs. Fisher, a senior from Spring, Texas, went 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.  
OCU faces Oklahoma Baptist in a 2 p.m. doubleheader Saturday in Shawnee, Okla.
