OCU rallies to 13-5 win over Northwood

Top-ranked Stars post 18 hits, three home runs in erasing five-run deficit against 24th-ranked Northwood

Cody Crabaugh took the victory Tuesday to run his record to 2-1 this year.
OKLAHOMA CITY – No. 1-ranked Oklahoma City University overcame a five-run deficit in rallying to a 13-5 victory over Northwood (Texas) on Tuesday at Jim Wade Stadium in a matchup of top 25-ranked teams in NAIA baseball.
Jonathan Sigado, a junior from Salem, Ore., provided the Stars with the go-ahead run on a two-run base hit in the third inning against 24th-ranked Northwood. OCU improved to 9-3 this year.
Chad Carman, Cody Ferrell and Dane Phillips each cranked home runs as OCU pounded 18 hits. Carman, a senior from Midwest City, went 3-for-5 with three runs scored, a double and three RBIs.
Phillips, a junior from Nacogdoches, Texas, was 3-for-6 with a run scored, a triple and two runs driven in, while Miguel Beltran, a senior from Long Beach, Calif., went 3-for-6 with a run scored and a double.
Cody Crabaugh picked up the win to move to 2-1. Crabaugh, a junior right-hander from Edmond, Okla., struck out five in five innings.
Northwood scored five first-inning runs, but none after the first inning. Crabaugh kept Northwood scoreless his final four innings of work. Crabaugh retired Northwood in order in the third and fourth and struck out the side in the fifth.
Will Patrigo, Allen Townsend and Patrick Goelz held Northwood to two hits and without a run the last four innings of the game.
With OCU down 5-0, Ferrell led off the bottom of the first by hammering a solo homer over the right-field wall to plate the Stars' first run of the game.
Brian Fisher cut the Stars' deficit to 5-3 with a two-run, second-inning base hit. Phillips nailed a homer to left leading off the third to make the score 5-4.
OCU increased its lead to 10-5 in the sixth. Carman knocked in a run on a single to left, then Kale Gaden drove in Carman on a double to left-center field. Rich Hawkins socked a run-scoring double to left-center.
Carman swatted a two-run blast over the left-field wall in the seventh. Phillips closed out the game's scoring with an RBI triple over the center fielder in the eighth.
The Stars face USAO at 4 p.m. Thursday in the start of a three-game Sooner Athletic Conference series.
