OCU splits two matches in Embry-Riddle Tournament

Stars defeat Northwood, then fall to Peru State

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Oklahoma City University knocked off Northwood (Fla.) 25-19, 25-27, 25-19, 25-18 before being edged by Peru State (Neb.) 21-25, 25-22, 25-23, 25-23 on Friday at the ICI Center in the Embry-Riddle Labor Day Tournament.

The Stars went to 4-2 on the year. Alex Benbrook, a senior from Enid, Okla., led OCU with 24 kills and four blocks Friday.

Against Northwood, Benbrook slammed down 14 kills, while Raissa Santos notched 13 kills and 10 digs for the Stars. Danielle Robison accumulated 39 assists, 12 digs and six kills, while Torrie Flynn nailed nine kills. Victoria Cross picked up a team-high 13 digs.

In the third set, OCU erased a 9-5 deficit with eight consecutive points. Santos, a senior from Sao Paulo, Brazil, sparked the OCU run with a kill and added an ace in that span. Benbrook and Robison chipped in kills during the Stars' 8-0 splurge.

Against Peru State, Meghan Irwin, Benbrook and Santos each posted 10 kills for OCU. Santos added 12 digs and two blocks, while Benbrook and Irwin each had four blocks. Robison, a sophomore from Dallas, rang up 34 assists, 18 digs and three blocks, and Cross, a senior from Oklahoma City, topped OCU with 21 digs.

In the first set, OCU cut into a 13-9 deficit using kills by Benbrook, Robison and Taylor Rowton. The Stars took an 18-17 edge as Irwin and Santos combined on a block, then won the set on Benbrook and Robison's block.

Maddy Lister had kills that gave Peru State the final two points of the second set and another kill that brought up set point in the third. Jessie Clark's kill sealed the win for Peru State.      

OCU faces Northwestern Ohio at 8 a.m., then Daemen (N.Y.) at 3:30 p.m., both times Central time Saturday in the Embry-Riddle Labor Day Tournament.
