RAPID CITY, S.D. – Oklahoma City University took over the lead after two rounds of the NAIA women's golf championships on Wednesday at Meadowbrook Golf Course.
The second-ranked Stars have shot 308-302–610 to hold a two-shot edge on fourth-ranked first-day leader British Columbia, which carded 301-311–612.
Laura Jones of OCU moved into a tie for third place after recording a 76-74–150, one stroke off the pace. Alyssa Human of British Columbia had a 73-76–149, while Anna Schopp of Lubbock Christian (Texas) shot a 73-76–149 to lead the field. Nathalie Silva of California Baptist was tied with Jones at 74-76–150.
Jones, a junior from Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, England, dropped in birdies on the par-4, 390-yard first hole, par-3, 149-yard second hole and par-5, 471-yard 15th hole. Jones had five bogeys, but no double bogeys.
Between OCU's five players, the Stars only had two double bogeys Wednesday after having five doubles Tuesday.
“I'm so proud of all five players,” OCU coach M.J. Desbiens said. “We learned from our mistakes, and we really improved on the tough holes.”
The Stars' Morgan Gay turned in a 76-76–152, good for a tie for eighth place. Gay, a senior from Lindsay, Okla., sank birdies on the par-4, 363-yard eighth hole and the par-5, 470-yard 18th hole. Gay had six bogeys, only one on her back nine.
Paige Martin compiled a 79-75–154 for OCU. Martin, a junior from Ardmore, Okla., knocked in birdies on the par-4, 336-yard 13th hole and the 15th hole while taking five bogeys.
Martin and Taylor Howard of the Stars were tied for 13th place. Howard, a freshman from Ada, Okla., had a 77-77–154 after burying birdies on the fourth, par-5, 473-yard ninth hole and the 18th hole. Howard had four bogeys and two double bogeys.
Tanya Tibshraeny of OCU had an 81-77–158. Tibshraeny birdied the par-4, 365-yard 11th hole and managed bogeys on six holes.
The conditions comprised of 71-degree temperatures and 15 mph winds.
The third round begins 8:30 a.m. Central time Thursday. Tibshraeny will be OCU's first player to tee off at 2:50 p.m.
