OCU drops two duals to NCAA Division I foes

Oklahoma ruins Stars' unbeaten start in duals

Kidd Gomez entered Saturday ranked third in the NAIA at 125 pounds.

NORMAN, Okla. – Oklahoma City University suffered its first dual losses of the season 43-0 to Oklahoma and 36-6 to North Carolina State on Saturday at the Mosier Indoor Track and Field Facility.

The Stars, ranked 12th in NAIA wrestling, entered Saturday with their best start ever at 4-0. Oklahoma entered ranked as high as second in NCAA Division I by Amateur Wrestling News.

OCU managed to score its only win of the day via forfeit. James Brigance picked up the victory at 184 pounds against N.C. State, another NCAA Division I squad.

“Wrestling is a sport where you're measured by performance,” OCU coach Archie Randall said. “We didn't expect to do well against OU, who was ranked second. We had four matches we should have won against N.C. State. We didn't perform well. We'll go back to the room and try to turn that around Wednesday.”

OU's Matt Lester edged Mark Meyer 3-2 in the 157-pound bout. Lester scored first on a takedown at 2:02 left in the first period. Meyer, ranked seventh among NAIA 157-pounders, answered with a reversal at the 1:15 mark.

Both wrestlers failed to score again in the match. Lester won by accumulating 1:34 of riding time.

The Stars' Tyson Campbell picked up a takedown, near fall and reversal in the third period, but fell 11-6 to Kyle Detmer. Detmer opened up an 8-0 lead entering the third.

At 125, Kidd Gomez managed only a takedown with 1:30 left in the match. Jarrod Patterson won 9-2 while notching three takedowns. Gomez is ranked third in the NAIA at 125.

Oklahoma's Zack Bailey, ranked No. 1 among NCAA 141-pounders, scored an 18-3 technical-fall win over Kenny Wheeler.

N.C. State's Brett Farina nipped Will Shelton-Delk 11-10 at 149. Farina overcame a 9-3 first-period deficit, taking the lead in the third period with a near fall and takedown. Delk scored three takedowns and a near fall in the first to take the lead.

At 141, Darrius Little of N.C. State held a 3-2 edge before catching Wheeler for a pin in 6:44.

At 157, Meyer tied the match 2-2 on an escape at the start of the third. Colton Palmer responded with a takedown and a near fall to win the bout.

KaRonne Jones won the 197-pound match 4-3 over OCU's Jake Mabry. Mabry knotted the match 3-3 with an escape in the second period. Jones held on for the win after a third-period escape.

The Stars meet Colorado State-Pueblo at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Abe Lemons Arena. To see the dual live, click here.
