OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University remained unbeaten and unchallenged, moving to 9-0 after three dual wins Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
The two-time defending Women's College Wrestling Association champion Stars defeated King (Tenn.) 29-8, Lindenwood (Mo.) 40-5 and Lindenwood's Gold team 42-2. OCU has won by an average score of 42-3 in its nine wins.
“We're on schedule, but we can't get complacent,” OCU coach Archie Randall said. “We've been rolling over people. Hopefully we don't get too satisfied. Our performance today was adequate, but not excellent. We've had better matches, but it was a pretty good day.”
Against King, Michaela Hutchison scored the pin over Kayla Bartosch at 55 kilograms in 1:11 to give OCU a 14-2 advantage in the dual. Kristie Davis also posted a 6-0, 7-0 technical-fall win over Tasha Galarza in the 67-kilo match. Amberle Montgomery followed at 72 with a forfeit for a 26-5 OCU lead.
At 59, Ashley Hudson pulled out a 2-0, 1-0 victory over Haylee Childs for OCU. Alli Ragan edged OCU's Tessa Plana 1-0, 1-0 in the 63-kilogram bout.
Against Lindenwood, Hutchison pinned Shauna Isbell in 1:59 in a battle of the top two ranked women's wrestlers at 55 kilograms in the nation. Hutchison, a junior from Soldotna, Alaska, avenged a loss to Isbell in the Sunkist Open last weekend. Isbell beat top-ranked Hutchison 2-0, 1-0 in the 51-kilogram third-place match.
Joey Miller also pinned Lindenwood's Brianna Gedeon in 1:09, and Brittany Delgado beat Desiree Martinez by fall in 1:47. Montgomery, a sophomore from Orting, Wash., stuck a pin on Kendra Lewis in 21 seconds, putting Lewis on her back and finishing her quickly. Davis defeated Brittany David 7-0, 6-0.
Against the Lindenwood Gold team, Davis, Delgado and Nicole Woody scored falls for the Stars. Na'Tasha Umemoto beat Melissa Vernon 8-1, 7-0 in a technical fall.
The Stars compete next in the Missouri Valley Open on Nov. 6 in Marshall, Mo.
Hudson, Montgomery wrestle in University World Championships
TORINO, Italy – Ashley Hudson and Amberle Montgomery of Oklahoma City University fell short of the medal rounds representing the United States in the University World Championships on Thursday at the Pala Ruffini Arena.
Hudson, a senior from Wildwood, Mo., took eighth place at 59 kilograms (130 pounds), while Montgomery finished seventh at 63 kilograms (138.75 pounds).
Montgomery opened with a victory over Italy's Simona Corbani 1-0, 2-1, but was eliminated in the quarterfinals by Japan's Marina Takahashi 4-4, 7-2, 3-2. Hudson dropped her opening match to Russia's Anna Maxsimova 2-0, 1-0.
The United States placed fifth in the final team standings with 43 points.
“We didn't wrestle very well,” OCU coach Archie Randall said. “That's just one of those deals.”
OCU assistant coach Link Davis, who coached for the U.S. squad, said, “We wrestled hard, but we're just young.”
