ATHERTON, Calif. – Oklahoma City University's Mark Meyer took third place at 165 pounds in the Menlo Invitational on Sunday at Haynes-Prim Pavilion.
Meyer's effort highlighted three OCU placers in the open tournament. Corey Johnson finished fourth at 285, while Nik Turner took fourth at 157 for the Stars.
So far this season, Meyer, Turner and Cameron Ream have qualified for the NAIA Championships on March 4-6 at Abe Lemons Arena.
Meyer, a sophomore from Midwest City, Okla., pinned Nick Sasfy of Cumberland (Tenn.) in 2:45 in the third-place match at 157. Meyer, ranked seventh among NAIA 157-pounders, also stuck falls on Armnder Virk of Simon Fraser (British Columbia) and Zach Sesar of San Francisco State on Sunday.
Turner, a junior from Norman, Okla., fell 5-2 to David Watts of UC Davis in the third-place bout at 165. Watts knocked Turner into the wrestleback bracket, and Turner battled his way into the third-place match with four wins. Turner, ranked second in the NAIA at 157, knocked off 12th-ranked Josh Emmett of Menlo (Calif.) 3-1 to advance to the third-place match.
Johnson, a senior from Oologah, Okla., lost to Ali Al-Rekabi of Simon Fraser 16-10 in the third-place match at 285 pounds. Johnson pinned Jonathan Perez of Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) and Jake Powell of Central Florida. Johnson also defeated Derek Marrero of San Jose State 17-4 to advance to the third-place bout.
The Stars compete next in the NWCA National Duals on Jan. 9-10 in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
