OCU softball coaches get regional staff of year

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University coach Phil McSpadden and assistants Bobbi Bridges, Guy Cook and Harold Copas have been selected as NAIA National Fastpitch Coaches Association Southwest Region coaching staff of the year.

The Stars went 53-9, won the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament and finished fourth in the NAIA Championships. McSpadden and his staff have been recognized as NAIA NFCA national coaching staff of the year in 2001 and 2007.

McSpadden guided OCU to its 21st national-tournament appearance in 22 years as OCU coach. Amanda Howard and Erin Slettvet were first-team NAIA all-Americans, and Howard became NAIA player of the year.

OCU has captured eight national championships under McSpadden. He has coached 40 individuals who became all-Americans and four who became NAIA player of the year  including two-time player of the year Cindy Yan Fang. Four former OCU players have helped their country win Olympic medals.

McSpadden has led OCU to 10 regional titles, five bi-district titles, five district titles and 13 conference crowns. He has gone 1,117-282 in 22 years as OCU coach.
