GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Oklahoma City finished a surprising NAIA Indoor Track and Field Championships in 14
th place for the women's team and 25
th for the men.
Â
"I couldn't be more proud of this team," said OCU Head Coach
Andrew Leahey. "We all knew what we were capable of, but we had to prove it, and boy we did! This weekend, this team bled blue creating upsets that nobody but ourselves saw coming."
Â
OCU brought home 16 All-America honors with Erika Pena getting three of those. Florencia Cabrera and Isabella Gutierrez earned two All-America awards for the women and Dmarion Dean had two for the men.
Â
Gutierrez, Cabrera, Isabelle Spiler and Pena placed third on Friday in the 4x800 relay in 9:07.52.
Â
Pena was sixth in the mile run at 4:53.39 and Kenzi Readnour also earned All-America status with a sixth-place finish in the 5000 meters at 17:29.41.
Â
Cabrera,
Vanessa Perez, Gutierrez and Pena placed fourth in the distance medley relay at 11:48.12.
Â
The OCU women finished 14
th with 20 points and the men finished with 10 points
Â
"Overall, we came in and did exactly what we wanted," said Leahey. "We made some noise when no one thought we would. Our girls' team with seven girls got 14th overall out of 68 teams. Two school records, 4x800 (9:02) and the DMR (11:48). 3 individual all Americans, Erika Pena (6th) PR'ing in the mile with a 4:53, Kenzi (6th) PR'ing in the 5k with a 17:29, Florencia getting 6th in the 1K with a 2:54."
Â
Dean was eighth in the 600 meters and joined
Brendan Robeaux,
Alexander Daly and
Hendrick Ramirez for second place and All-America status in the distance medley relay.
Ayenew Devany was eight for All-America honors in the 3000 meters at 8:16.66.
Â
"On the guys side, the men's DMR was ranked last coming into the finals because we got in on a protest because they made us do an extra lap in our heat," said Leahey. "We showed up and almost got the whole cake by 0.2 secs. However, walking away with a second place still felt just as good as a win just knowing how many doubted this DMR team had. And we had two individual all Americans with Ayenew in the 3k (8:16/ PR) and Demarion in the 600 (1:19)."
