Stars Survive Wild Second Game for Sweep of TWU

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City survived an extra-inning scare in a wild second game to complete a sweep of Texas Wesleyan on Friday, 3-0 and 12-11 in eight innings.

After Brynlee Alsip checked the Rams on two hits in the opener, the Stars rallied from down six runs to take the second game, which featured hotly contested calls by both teams and six plays at the plate, four of which resulted in outs and two that resulted in arguments.

OCU 3, TWU 0
Alsip shut the Rams out on two hits for her first of two wins on the day.

All the runs came off the bat of defending NAIA Player of the Week Analise Rayburn who hit a two-run home run in the fourth and a solo shot in the sixth for her 14th and 15th home runs of the season.

OCU had six hits in the game with Tara Hoehner adding a double and a single to Rayburn's two round-trippers.

OCU 12, TWU 11

For 2.5 innings it was all Texas Wesleyan. The Rams scored seven times in the first three innings and OCU's only pulse was an inside-the-park home run by Hoehner.

OCU scored four in the bottom of the third on RBI walks by Gabby Moreno and Jessica Phares ahead of a two-run single by Peyton Barrow.

TWU went up 8-5 in the top of the fourth but the Stars scored twice in the home half on an RBI single by Kaiden Spidell and a third-strike wild pitch.

The Rams expanded their lead to 10-7 in the top of the fifth but Alsip returned to the circle for a relief appearance and allowed only an unearned run via the tiebreaker rule in the top of the eight.

The Stars scored three times in the bottom of the seventh to send the game to extra innings. OCU used an RBI single by Hadley Gibson, a sacrifice fly by Iliana Ashford and an RBI double by Hoehner. Hoehner was later called out on a close play at home when she moved up to third on wild pitch that bounced off the backstop and all the way to third base.

TWU got an unearned run on a sacrifice fly by KK Moore in the top of the eighth, but Alsip closed the door after that.

Rayburn was placed at second to start the bottom of the eighth inning. She stole second and scored on a throwing error on another close call at home. Spidell, Moreno and Barrow all singled to load the bases and Spidell scored just ahead of the tag on a wild pitch to end the game.

Alsip got the win with four innings of one-hit relief.

The Stars had 15 hits, led by Barrow and Spidell with three each. Gibson, Hoehner and Moreno had two hits each. Rayburn was one-for-one with four walks.

The two teams meet again in a noon doubleheader on Saturday.
