OKLAHOMA CITY —  The Oklahoma City University men's wrestling team is primed to build on last year's historic podium finish, chasing a national title with a loaded roster of veterans and high-impact transfers.
Â
Fresh off leading the Stars to a program-best third-place finish at the NAIA National Championships last season, head coach and NWCA Coach of the Year
Justin Ensign enters the year with unwavering expectations.
Â
"The standard and the expectation are still high," Ensign said. "We return a wealth of experience and added a few tough transfers that can make an immediate impact."
Ensign outlined clear, elite objectives for the upcoming campaign, leaving no doubt about the program's direction: "Repeat as conference champions, Win NWCA National Duals and compete for a NAIA Championship."
Â
Championship Expectations and Veteran Core
Despite losing key point-scorers to graduation, OCU retains an experienced foundation anchored by three returning All-Americans:
Kaden Fetterolf,
Vincent Citrano, and
Omari Smith. Ensign said his top trio is "expected to look to move up the podium."
Â
They are flanked by four national qualifiers positioned to break through on the national stage.
Â
Cash Donnell "may not have had the best national tournament," Ensign noted, but the coach emphasized that the junior "has shown he can beat All-Americans."
Â
Jake Moon earned a No. 9 seed at the national tournament last year and proved he "was right there with a lot of the top guys in the country," according to Ensign.
Â
Jace Province caught fire late, with Ensign noting that the sophomore "stepped [up] at the end of the season and including a few big wins at the national tournament."
Â
Cole Olguin also showed postseason resilience, as he "avenged several early season losses in the postseason" to put himself in a position to become "consistently one of the best guys in the country," Ensign said.
Â
The coach added that OCU will look to
Wes Madden and
Kaden Wallace for major contributions. Though they "weren't in the postseason lineup" a year ago, Ensign noted that both "grew a ton and are going to be expected to contribute a lot as well."
Â
High-Impact Transfers and Full Roster Depth
The Stars heavily reloaded through the transfer portal, adding multiple athletes with Division I and Division II experience.
Â
At 149 pounds,
KJ Evans arrives as a "very talented Division I transfer from OU and Northern Colorado." If Evans "can get to his best form he can compete for a national championship at this level," Ensign said.
Â
Christian Bell, a heavyweight transfer from Division I The Citadel, already owns an impressive NAIA pedigree after securing "wins over 3 NAIA National Tournament Qualifiers last year," Ensign noted.
Â
Luke Brooks, a transfer from NCAA Division II Ouachita Baptist University, also joins the room as a wrestler who "comes with a lot of valuable experience" and is a former "state champ from Poteau, OK," Ensign said.
Â
To achieve the team's lofty goals, Ensign will rely heavily on the depth of his complete roster.
Â
The full squad includes upperclassmen and veteran leadersÂ
Mercer Ashley andÂ
William McMahan, juniorÂ
Alex Wilson, and graduate studentÂ
Gatlin Wilson.
Â
The roster is rounded out by hard-working sophomoresÂ
Gavin Gagnon andÂ
Dax Lopez, alongside freshman newcomerÂ
Gannon Sanders, all of whom add vital competition and depth to the training room.
Â
Benchmark Showdowns Ahead
The Stars will test their championship aspirations against top-tier competition early. Ensign pointed to three specific events on the schedule that will serve as critical benchmarks for his squad:
Â
"The Fire Duals at Southeastern University in Florida, our away dual with 14-time national champs Grand View and NWCA National duals."
Â
The road map begins with the Fire Duals on Saturday, Dec. 5, followed by the NWCA National Duals spanning Friday, Jan. 8 and Saturday, Jan. 9. The rigorous stretch wraps up with a marquee away showdown at Grand View University on Tuesday, Jan. 19.
