OCU Defense Shines in One-Point Win

FORT WORTH – Oklahoma City used a strong defensive night to overcome 27 turnovers and take a 55-54 win at Texas Wesleyan on Thursday.

The Stars held the Rams to 29 percent shooting from the field and took the victory after Ellie Willard converted two free throws with 3.3 seconds to play.

OCU trailed by seven points midway through the fourth quarter. Weronika Tomaszuk scored four points and Willard canned a three-pointer to tie the score at 49-49 with 1:24 to go. Tomaszuk added a basket for a brief OCU lead but three Rams free throws gave TWU a 54-53 lead with six seconds to go.

A foul by TWU sent Willard to the line and Willard was up to the high-pressure task for the game-winning free throws. The Rams had the last possession but could not land the buzzer-beater.

Victoria Ososanya scored a team-high 14 points and Tomaszuk added 11.

Ososanya and Lauren Rowan had six rebounds each and Willard added six assists.

The Stars are back home on Saturday, hosting Nelson at 2 p.m .
