Early Evangel surge pushes MACU over OCU

OKLAHOMA CITY - The Oklahoma City Women's Basketball team fell in a hole early on in the first quarter that it struggled to dig out of while Mid-America Christian pulled away early to sweep the season series. 

TOP PERFORMERS

STAT OF THE GAME: Freshman Brooke Curry sank three shots from range scoring 11 points making it the 11th games this season Curry has cashed in on multiple threes. 

FIRST QUARTER: The teams began the contest going back and forth early on as Brooke Curry put the Stars ahead 7-6 with her first three of the day. One minute later with MACU in front Raegan Travis cut it down to a two-point deficit being the final make the Stars had for the rest of the quarter. Mid-America Christian closed out the period on a 12-0 run as Oklahoma City was shutout for the final 5:33.

SECOND QUARTER: The scoring drought lasted almost three and a half minutes into the second quarter before Lauren Rowan broke the nine minute scoreless streak. The Evangels pushed its lead up to 21 points in the period behind two threes while Amaya Gordon scored four of her six total points during the 10-minute stint. 

THIRD QUARTER: Ray Osborn opened the quarter with the first six points for OCU bringing the deficit down to 15 before a 10-2 MACU run gave the Evangels their largest lead of the day at 48-25. Oklahoma City found some momentum in the final five minutes with a 10-3 run of its own as a nine point quarter for Osborn helping bring Stars within 15 once again.

FOURTH QUARTER: The Stars gave one last push by stringing together a 10-2 run to make it a 10 point game with 1:19 to play, the smallest deficit OCU faced since the 3:14 mark in the first quarter. It was to little to late for Oklahoma City as the Evangels went out with the final six points to secure the 70-54 victory on Saturday afternoon. 

GAME NOTES
  • After winning three in a row the Stars have dropped its previous two games both by double-digit margins moving its overall record to 8-13 to go along with an 8-9 record in SAC play. 
  • Raegan Travis led the team in scoring with 12 points as the senior posted her first double-figure scoring day since Jan. 6 to mark her fourth double-digit game of the season. Travis tied the team lead in rebounding by hauling in her second-highest board total of the year with seven. 
  • Ray Osborn notched a season-high 11 points on an efficient 5-of-8 shooting day from the field. Osborn reaches double-figures for the first time this season in just 16 minutes of action. 
  • Victoria Ososonya matched Travis with seven rebounds to tie a season-high in the rebounding category.
  • MACU sweeps the season-series over the Stars after winning inside Abe Lemons Arena back on Dec. 14 by a score of 53-45. 
  • Mid-American Christian picks up its third straight win over OCU as the all-time series moves to 33-6 in favor of the Stars since 2007. 
NEXT TIME OUT: The Oklahoma City three-game road trip concludes on Thursday, Jan. 30 against Langston at 6:00 PM.
