Gordon's big night helps OCU escape in major road victory

WAXAHACHIE, Texas - The Oklahoma City Women's Basketball team came away with a three-point win on Thursday night inside the Sheaffer Center behind Amaya Gordon's 27 point double-double.

STAR OF THE SHOW: Amaya Gordon posted her third double-double of the season by tying her season-high of 27 points previously set against John Brown back on Nov. 26. Gordon hauled in her second-highest rebound total of the year with 11 while shooting a perfect 8-for-8 from the charity stripe. The Stars senior brought her career scoring total to 991 points giving her a chance to break into the 1,000 point club on Saturday. 

STAT OF THE GAME: Oklahoma City was lights out from the free throw line on Thursday night sinking the most free throws made in a game this season with 19 on 20 attempts. 

FIRST QUARTER: Nelson opened up fast with a 9-0 lead on three straight three-pointers from the Lions including back-to-back makes by Kate Miller. After trailing 11-2, Oklahoma City made its way back with a 12-2 run led by Amaya Gordon who scored the Stars first nine points before Taryn Cottrell made it a one point game with a three of her own. Nelson closed out the first quarter with a 7-2 run finishing the period with 15 of its 20 points coming from beyond the arc. 

SECOND QUARTER: In the second quarter Nelson held at least a seven-point lead or more through the first seven minutes including going up double-digits with six minutes to go. Oklahoma City began to lock in holding the Lions to three points in the final five minutes of play where it was Victoria Ososonya leading the Stars scoring in the quarter with five points, all coming from the free throw line as the teams headed into the locker room with a six point margin. 

THIRD QUARTER: Opening up the second half Oklahoma City came out scoring the first six points as Ray Osborn tied the game at 31 with a jumper one minute in. Back-to-back threes from Nelson put the Lions back up by six and eventually took as much as an eight point advantage while both teams scored 12 points each in the quarter sending the contest into the final 10 minutes with Nelson leading 43-37. 

FOURTH QUARTER: The Stars rode their highest-scoring quarter in the fourth despite Nelosn taking a 10 point lead with 7:34 to play. From that point on the Lions were held to only two points for the next six minutes while OCU grabbed its first lead of the night after a pair of Lauren Rowan free throws with 1:37 to play. Down to 17 seconds freshman Brooke Curry put the Stars up three with two free throws of her own before Nelson answered with a quick layup bringing it back to one. Out of a timeout, Oklahoma City inbounded the ball down the floor to Amaya Gordon on the run who laid in the wide open layup while the last second three from Lauryn Scalice wouldn't fall giving OCU the road win of 57-54.

GAME NOTES
  • Oklahoma City wins back-to-back games for the third time this season moving to 7-11 overall and 7-7 in SAC play. 
  • Despite shooting only 30% from the field, Oklahoma City heated up in the fourth quarter where the Stars shot 58.3% in the quarter including a 6-for-6 stint from the line. 
  • Ray Osborn tied her season-high of eight points in just 19 minutes of action while posting a season-best two assists. 
  • Lauren Rowan scored four points all coming in the final quarter while hauling in a career-high 12 rebounds to lead the team on Thursday night. 
  • Oklahoma City sweeps the season-series with Nelson after falling to the Lions inside Abe Lemons Arena back on Nov. 14 by a score of 71-52. 
  • The Stars earn their season-sweep over Nelson for the first time since the 2021-22 season moving the all-time series record to 19-4 in favor OCU dating back to 2014.
NEXT TIME OUT: Oklahoma City will have its regular quick turnaround getting back into action on Saturday, Jan. 18 at 2:00 PM inside Abe Lemons Arena against UNT-Dallas.
