Ninth inning rally falls short, Stars drop series opener to SCU

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoma City baseball team saw its comeback fall short in an 8-7 defeat to Southwestern Christian in the first game of the Series on Friday night.

After the loss, OCU moved to 22-13 and 8-5 in SAC play, while Southwestern Christian improved to 23-12 overall and 7-6 in conference play.

Hunter Lenochan and Chad Pike led the way offensively for the Stars while Lenochan went 3-for-5 with a double, RBI and a run scored. Pike also collected three hits while adding a double, RBI and scored twice.

Andrew Limbaugh made the start for OCU and went 6.1 innings allowing four runs on four hits to go along with four walks.

Frankie Danel III suffered the defeat in a relief appearance while Chad Pike and Cade Kelsey also made appearances out of the bullpen.

The Eagles jumped out to an early lead with one run in the first as Jhors Gomez doubled with two outs followed by a Dario Paredes RBI single to score Gomez from second. Southwestern Christian added two more runs in the second as Jake Cox drove in his only RBI during a three-hit game to put SCU up 3-0.

Oklahoma City got back into the ball game with Lenochan driving in a run in the third while Aiden Alexander brought in Spencer Biggerstaff with a sac fly to right field.

The two sides began to go back and forth as OCU took its first lead of the day as Reese Ratchford took a bases loaded walk in the sixth.

SCU turned right back around and took the lead back on a Matys Gagnon two RBI to left center. Once again, the Stars had an answer as Pike tied the game in the seventh with a base hit to left scoring Darian Duhon.

In the eighth, Southwestern Christian finally broke the game open as Gomez cleared the bases with a three run double to right field that put the Eagles out in front 8-5.

The Stars began their ninth inning comeback after loading the bases in the bottom of the ninth while scoring two runs on a bases loaded walk and hit by pitch. Alexander had the chance with two outs but lined out sharply to centerfield to end the ball game.

The two teams will meet up again tomorrow for a doubleheader starting at 1 PM on Denney Crabaugh Field at Jim Wade Stadium.
