Cornelson strikes out 15, Heron posts four RBIs in a pair of shutout wins over Wayland Baptist

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoma City softball team ran away for a pair of shutout victories over Wayland Baptist as Shelbey Cornelson posted a career-high 15 strikeouts in game one while Emersen Heron followed up with a four RBI performance in game two.  

Oklahoma City 3 – Wayland Baptist 0 

The win improves OCU to 31-2 on the year (20-1 in the SAC. The loss for Wayland Baptist drops the Pioneers to 16-19 overall (12-9 in the SAC).  
 
Kamryn Garvie opened the scoring for the Stars with a solo home run in the bottom of the first, tying Emersen Heron for the team lead with eight home runs this season.  
 
Tiffany Paul provided the next two runs for Oklahoma City with a sacrifice fly coming in the second while Paul slashed an RBI single in the fourth to score Tara Hoehner for the third Stars run of the game. 
 
Senior Shelbey Cornelson shined inside the circle tossing her sixth shutout of the season while allowing just one hit after putting together a single game career-high 15 strikeouts bringing her season total to 114 on the year. 
 
Offensively, OCU was led by Garvie (3-for-3 with an RBI), Paul (1-for-1 with two RBIs) and Baileigh Loux (1-for-3).  
 
Cornelson  improved to 13-2 on the year with her 12th complete game of the season. Addy Rich suffered the loss, moving her season record to 7-5 after going six innings of work, allowing three runs on five hits with one strikeout.  

Oklahoma City 9 – Wayland Baptist 0 

With the win, OCU moves to 32-2 on the year (21-1 in the SAC. The loss for Wayland Baptist drops the Pioneers to 16-20 overall (12-10 in the SAC). 

The Stars plated four runs in the opening frame after Kaitlyn Jones, Kamryn Garvie and Baileigh Loux all reached base on three straight walks setting up Emersen Heron to deliver a two RBI double. 

Tara Hoehner kept the first inning rolling with a two-run homer to left, her seventh of the year to make it a 4-0 ball game. 

OCU added five more in the third after Garvie led things off with a double to left followed by Heron's team-leading ninth home run of the season.  

Amy Crabaugh and Kindalyn Miller added RBIs each with Crabaugh knocking her fifth double of the season while Miller drove in Crabaugh with a single through the left side for her 10th RBI of the year. 
 
Pitcher Emersen Heron remained perfect inside the circle moving to 14-0 on the year. Heron pitched her 10th complete game and second shutout of the year while allowing just three hits and collected four strikeouts.  

OCU was led offensively by Heron (2-for-3, HR, 4 RBIs), Hoehner (2-for-2, HR, 2B, 2 RBIs) and Crabaugh (1-for-2, 2B, RBI). 

OCU returns to action on Saturday, Apr. 5 with another doubleheader against Wayland Baptist tomorrow at Ann Lacy Stadium beginning at 1 PM.
