Cornelson secures 100th career win; Stars take two at SAGU

WAXAHACHIE, Texas - The Oklahoma City softball team began its final series of the regular season by picking up two wins on the road at SAGU.

With the win, Oklahoma City improves to 45-2 overall with a 32-1 conference record. SAGU drops to 14-33 with the loss and 8-25 in SAC play. 

OCU scored its five runs on seven hits along with one defensive miscue while the Lions suffered a shutout defeat with five hits and two errors. 

Shelbey Cornelson highlighted game one with her 18th complete game and 11th shutout while picking up her 20th win of the season.

Cornelson's win inside the circle gave her win number 100 in her OCU career and placed her second all-time in career wins and career strikeouts at Oklahoma City.  

Cornelson now sits behind Lily LaVelle who is the current program leader in career wins (122) and strikeouts in a career (1,411).

Baileigh Loux provided the team with three hits, two being for extra bases to go along with an RBI in the first inning. Loux extended her hitting streak to eight games and scored for the sixth consecutive time out. 

Emersen Heron followed up Loux by driving her in from second base in the first inning with a single to center. 

Oklahoma City scored twice more in the second as the Stars took advantage of a Lions error off the bat of Kaitlyn Jones that brought in Iliana Ashford and Amy Crabaugh

Tiffany Paul drove in the last run the Stars got on a groundout to second base as Paul earned RBI number 37 on the year.

The Stars moved to 46-2 with the victory, 33-1 in conference play while moving its winning streak to 27 games in a row. SAGU falls 14-34 with an 8-26 SAC record. 

Oklahoma City scored 11 runs on 10 hits while SAGU failed to get a run across on five hits and one error.

OCU jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead after a grand slam in each inning coming from freshman Tara Hoehner in the first and Kamryn Garvie in the second.

The Stars wrapped up their night with three runs in the fourth inning with a double coming from Emersen Heron and then a triple coming in the following at-bat by Hoehner once again. 

Tiffany Paul finished things off with a sac fly to the right that gave OCU its 11th run of the night. 

Tara Hoehner came away with a 2-for-3 game while notching five RBIs for the third time this season while hitting her first career grand slam. 

Kamryn Garvie took the team lead in homers with her 13th of the year coming on her second-inning grand slam. 

Emersen Heron led the way in hits for the Stars after a perfect 3-for-3 game at the plate as Heron picked up two doubles to give 20 on the year, a team-high. 

Heron also made the start inside the circle for OCU in game two and earned the win in five innings of work moving to 21-0 on the year with her fifth shutout of the season.

Baileigh Loux added her 18th double of the season while moving her hit streak to nine games.

Tiffany Paul became the third Star to have multiple base hits joining Hoehner and Heron. Paul secured her second two-hit game in the last three outings while batting in her 38th run of the year. 

Oklahoma City earned its eighth consecutive victory over SAGU moving the all-time series record to 42-1 with the one loss coming in 2022. 

The two schools will square once more for the regular season finale on Thursday, Apr. 25 with a doubleheader beginning at noon.
