Carranza and Crabaugh named Jim Wade Award winners

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University named Anthony Carranza the male student-athlete of the year and Amy Crabaugh the female student-athlete of the year in the 2023-24 Jim Wade Awards on Sunday night inside of Abe Lemons Arena.

Jim Wade Award winners annually have been chosen by OCU's athletic department as those who best represent the Stars on and off the field of competition and embody the spirit of the award's namesake, the late Gen. Jim Wade. Each OCU team selected its own Jim Wade Award winner to be considered for the overall awards. The Stars honored their latest induction class into Chi Alpha Sigma, a national student-athlete honor society as well as the Stars' most recent national champions.

Carranza, a senior out of Enid, Okla., joined the cross-country team in 2021 and has made huge impacts on the University inside and outside of competition. One of Carranza's biggest accomplishment this year came in the 8k race in the DBU Old Glory Gallup on October 7th where he set a new personal record with a time of 26:22.4.

Outside of competition, Carranza holds role of Student Body President. Over Carranza's time at OCU, he has become more involved with the NAIA and learned more about the college athletics administration side of things. Carranza took an opportunity to be involved on the conference level as well with the Sooner Athletic Conference by being an athlete representative and getting the opportunity to be on the national NSA board for student-athletes. On an NAIA level, Carranza also serves as an American Red Cross representative and was accepted into the leadership program in 2022.

Most recently, Carranza was Selected to Represent UniUSA at FISU Forum in Zagreb, Croatia. The FISU World Forum is an opportunity for students and officials from the international university sports movement to engage in meetings and exchanges associating culture and education with physical and sporting activities. Combining academic sessions with cultural, educational, and sporting activities, it is a powerful communication platform for the various university sports communities

Crabaugh, a graduate student from Edmond, Okla., joined the program back in 2020 and is finishing her fifth season with the Stars where she has started in 191 games and put together a career batting average of .335 with 35 doubles and 20 home runs. In her time at OCU, Amy has been a two-time all-conference selection as well as winning a SAC gold glove award last season

In the 2024 season, Amy is having one of if not her best season yet by hitting .413 with four home runs and 24 RBIs. Crabaugh saw one her best games come on Tuesday against NCAA Division 2 Rogers State where she went 2-for-3 with a home run in game one and had the go-ahead RBI in game two help OCU sweep the doubleheader.

OCU highlighted some of the major events and accomplishments in Sunday's awards including the three championships brought home from Daytona between the Dance, Cheer and Stunt teams.

Other highlights included the Women's Golf team being recognized for the highest team GPA at 3.553, as well as honoring performances such as best play, best comeback, best individual performance along with honoring Chi-Alpha-Sigma inductees and the record breaking 4x800 relay team who broke two NAIA records at the NAIA Track & Field National Championships in late March.

Wade competed for OCU in baseball, basketball and football and became an OCU Athletic Hall of Famer and university trustee emeritus. Wade was a general in the U.S. Air Force who was decorated for service in the Korean War and had tours of duty in World War II and the Vietnam War. He earned his bachelor of arts from the university in 1949. OCU's baseball field, office suites and soccer press box bear his name.
